Charlie Wilson’s War Charles Nesbitt Wilson was a United States naval officer who was also a former Democratic U.S. Representative from Texas’s 2nd congressional district. Charlie is best known for leading congress into supporting Operation Cyclone, the largest CIA covert operation which supplied military equipment to the Mujahideen including Stinger missile systems which were the main downfall of the USSR in the Afghan Proxy War. Charlie was born in the small town of Trinity, Texas. Charlie earned the second most demerits (A demerit is a negative mark for misconduct or deficiency) in the history of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland and his roommate, Robert Mullen, earned the most demerits. Even though Charlie had the second most demerits he still graduated eighth from the bottom of his class in 1956. He served in the U.S. Navy for five years in which he received the rank of lieutenant and gunnery officer on a destroyer. Wilson was assigned later on to the pentagon as part of an intelligence unit that studied the Soviet Union’s nuclear forces. Wilson first entered politics when he was a teenager by running a campaign against his next door neighbor, city council incumbent Charles Hazard. When fourteen years old Hazard put crushed glass in Wilsons dogs food bowl and caused the dog internal bleeding and ended up dying because the dog walked on his yard. When Wilson got his driver’s permit and drove ninety six voters t the polls and he would tell them that he killed his dog but he would say that he doesn’t want to influence their vote. He won by sixteen votes, this was when Wilson first really became in love with America. Charlie had a huge impact on the Soviet war in Afghanistan by increasing the CIA budget for the Afghan operation. In 1983 he won $40 million, $17 million of which was allocated for Stinger missile systems to shoot down Mil Mi-24 Hind helicopters.
