Charlie Hebdo Research Paper
Committee: SPECIAL CONVENTION ON RELIGION AND

TERROR

Topic: The Charlie Hebdo and Copenhagen Attacks

Organisation: Bodu Bala Sena (BBS)

School: Sunbeams

Delegate: Naiyareen Fareeza Mayeen

None of the members of the BBS were directly involved with the Charlie Hebdo newspaper and

none of them were present during the attacks that took place in the Charlie Hebdo office in Paris

and at a public afternoon event called "Art, Blasphemy and Freedom of Expression" at the

Krudttønden cultural centre in Copenhagen. However, the BBS is no stranger to Muslim

extremists and terrorist attacks. In Sri Lanka and elsewhere, they have been trying to impose

their own rituals and beliefs on people of different religious faiths and converting people

In fact, it is stated in the Quran (the holy book of the Muslims’) that people from all

religious faiths should be treated with respect and no one should be forced to convert to Islam-

“There is no compulsion where the religion is concerned.” (Holy Quran: 2/ 256) and “God does

not forbid you from being good to those who have not fought you in the religion or driven you

from your homes, or from being just towards them. God loves those who are just.” (Surat al-

Mumtahana, 8)”.

The BBS is in full agreement with Article 19 of the Universal Charter of Human Rights which

states ‘Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom

to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas

through any media and regardless of frontiers.’. However, the BBS also believes that this right

should not be abused to make any individual or community feel disempowered or disrespected.

Everyone must show a modicum of respect for people of different faiths. The BBS does not

support laïcité- the government of a particular country should be according to the religious

beliefs of the people of that country instead of letting democratic and pluralistic values kill

There are many views surrounding the Charlie Hebdo firebombing from January 7th. Many journalists from sources such as The Guardian, FOX News, and the New York Times say that the shooting of cartoonists in defense of religious beliefs is unethical and immoral. However, these approaches to the issue of freedom of speech presented by the Hebdo cartoons, which portray the Muslim prophet Mohammed in derogatory and lewd sketches, are represented quite differently by Joe Sacco in his comic titled On Satire. In this comic, Sacco demonstrates his opinion on the issue of freedom of speech by showing how offensive the material was that Hebdo had published. This was easily…

This was due to it being the first high school shooting with a significantly high death toll (List of school massacres by death toll, n.d.). The two perpetrators of this shooting were Eric David Harris and Dylan Bennet Klebold. The boys, aged 18 and 17 respectively, were both senior students in the aforementioned high school. Islam teaches us to respect our fellow human beings, whether Islamic or not. “O humankind! We created you from a single pair of a male and female, and made you into nations and tribes, that you may know and deal with each other in kindness (not that you may despise each other). Verily the most honored of you in the sight of God (is he who is) the most righteous of you, and God is Knower, Aware.” (The Quran, Al-Hujurat 49:13) In ancient times, Muslims and non-Muslims used to live together in peace and harmony as one together. We do not judge other people and we do not dislike ones based on their religion.…

For example, Tatars were tolerant to other religions and allowed conquered people to practice their own beliefs. But Al-Athir’s source saying how he is ought to «…defend the True Faith», even though Tatars were not specifically targeting Islam. Tatar’s lifestyle is the complete opposite to what Al-Athir is used to as well. Coming from the land with strict rules on diet and marriage, Tatar's diet of «for they eat al beasts» is unacceptable. The same is with the way Tatars treat women and marriage ties.…

Americans strongly affirm the principles of religious freedom, religious tolerance, and separation of church and state. Nearly 9-in-10 (88 percent) Americans agree that America was founded on the idea of religious freedom for everyone, including religious groups that are unpopular. Ninety-five percent of Americans agree that all religious books should be treated with respect even if we don’t share the religious beliefs of those who use them. Nearly two-thirds (66 percent) of Americans agree that we must maintain a strict separation of church and state. Americans’ views of Muslims and Islam are mixed, however. As with other previously marginalized religious groups in U.S. history, Americans are grappling with the questions Islam poses to America’s founding principles and way of life.…

It is ironic that while they are based on similar scriptures, and therefore similar ideologies, Christianity and Islam have had divergent attitudes towards the acceptance of religious minorities. By its nature, the Christian faith antagonizes other religions, including Judaism and Islam, because, according to Christian scripture, a lack of belief in the divinity of Jesus Christ results in damnation. The Muslim faith, however, has a much more tolerant view on “People of the Book,” including Christians and Jews, since such tolerance is stipulated by Islamic scripture. Subsequent treatment (as opposed to acceptance) of religious minorities, however, was similar between followers of the two religions, ranging from relative social indifference, for example religious freedom in exchange for a tax, to extreme violence, despite differences in attitudes towards acceptance. It appears that, for the Christians and Muslims, the relationship between religious acceptance and religious treatment/violence is extremely weak, as the latter can usually be linked to political or economic motives.…

In Islam, there is no compulsion or coercion to embrace its faith, and that's why it has been so stated categorically in Surat Al Baqarah (2): 256. However, no state or authority would take anything capable of uprooting its existence with levity; hence any attempt of such even in the secular laws always attracts death penalty. The Shariah view of apostasy is that of treason, and this could be better understood and appreciated when you recite Surat Al-Imran: 72, where Alla Taala uncovered apostasy as not just an exercise of one's freedom (as popularly claimed) but a calculated plot to undermine and subvert the nation of Islam. The Jews in those days actually devised that ploy by telling some of their followers to go and declare their acceptance of Islam only to come back after a while to renounce it and announce to people that they have detected it was such a bad faith! Here is the Qur'anic account of their plot: "And a faction of the People of the Scripture say (to each other) 'Believe in that which was revealed to the believers at the beginning of the day, but reject it at its end, that perhaps they will return (abandon their religion) ". The last sentence leaves no one in doubt of the true motive for this Satanic plot.…

Although some people see religion as an opportunity to bond with others while sometimes it sets boundaries for some, certain people are exceptions from this idea and are welcoming to people of all religions. Some people understand that there are many different religions and people are entitled to their own opinions and respect that and that respect could also be a bond between people of all religions and people who don't follow a certain…
