BY: JACOB A. BOOKOUT

Charles Manson is a convicted serial killer who has become an icon of evil. In the late 1960’s, Manson founded a hippie cult group known as “the Family” whom he manipulated into brutally killing others on his behalf.
Charles Manson was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to 16 year-old Kathleen Maddox. Kathleen had run away from home at the age of 15 and spent the next few decades drinking too much, with periods of time spend in jail. Since his mother couldn’t take care of him, Charles spent his youth at the homes of various relatives and often at special reform schools and boys homes. By age nine, Charles Manson had already started stealing and soon added burglary and stealing cars to his agenda. The next year, he married Rosalie Willis, a waitress, and they had a son together, Charles Manson Jr. Even while married, Manson had continued making extra money by stealing cars. In April 1956, he was again sent to prison. After Manson had been in prison for a year, his wife found someone new and divorced him in June 1957. (http://history1900s.about.com) In 1958, Manson was released from prison. While out, he began pimping, stealing checks from mailboxes, and conned a young woman out of money. He also married again, to a woman named Leona, and fathered a second son, Charles Luther Manson. Manson was again arrested on June 1, 1960 and sent to the McNeil Island Penitentiary off the coast of Washington. His wife soon divorced him. (http://history1900s.about.com) Charles Manson spent the next six years in prison. It was during this time that he befriended the infamous Alvin “Creepy” Karpis, former member of Ma Barker’s gang. After Karpis taught Charles to play the steel guitar, Manson became obsessed with making music. He practiced all the time, wrote dozens of original songs, and started singing. He believed that

Creating a group of followers is not an easy thing to do. Persuading your followers to murder for you is even harder. The way Manson convinced his followers to kill was like he was one of those magicians who know how to control people thoughts by using a spell and a hand clock. On top of controlling people, his murders were well organized that it took months for the authorities to figure out who committed the crimes, even after they left a signature in every murder scene. The signature that his followers left in both scenes was the word “pig” written on a wall with a victim’s blood. Charles Manson became well known for his manipulation of making people murder for him. But, many people never understood what made these groups of followers to do it. Why did a group of young adults listen to one man? What made them consider murder was normal? The year was 1969, and in early August seven people were brutally murdered; words like “Pig,” “Healter Skelter” and “Rise” were found printed in blood at the crime scenes. Eventually it is discovered that the perpetrators of these horrific crimes are cult members living on the outskirts of society, led by a man named Charles Manson. But who is Charles Manson? Charles Manson is a monster, certainly, but as a monster he offers us a unique look into the human mind. This semester we have learned about the many different types of people who may engage in individual forms of interpersonal violence. Charles Manson however, provides us the case study of a man whose life revolved around interpersonal violence in all its manifestations. There was nothing this man wouldn’t do to reach his goals – he would rape, murder, manipulate, and lie - all in the name of his personal ambitions. In Vincent Bugliosi’s book, Helter Skelter: The True Story of the Manson Murders, the reader is provided a thorough explanation of how Manson developed his criminal lifestyle though the focus is on the famous murders he helped to commit as the leader of The Family and the process used to convict him. After a brief comment about the book as a whole and its writing style and content, Manson’s connections to the subject of interpersonal violence will be examined. These connections include the subjects of child neglect, rape, domestic violence, and spiritual abuse.…

Charles Manson was born on November 12, 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Manson’s mother was sixteen years old when she gave birth to him. His birth name was Charles Milles Maddox, but was later changed to match his stepfather’s last name name, William Manson. Charles Manson grew up in a very unstable home. His mother was in jail for armed robbery during most of his childhood, so Manson was shifted among family members, foster homes, and eventually reformatories for many years (Baughman). He was raised by his mother, Kathleen Maddox, when she was out of jail, but he never had a relationship with his father. Manson’s mother was very unreliable. In exchange for a pitcher of beer, his mother once traded off her young son to a woman who desperately wanted to have a child. Manson was returned later to his mother after his uncle went off searching for the woman, so he could get his nephew back (“Manson Family Murders”). Manson’s tough, unstable home life may have been what started all his crimes to come.…
