The Oxford Living English Dictionary defines character as “The mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.” Within the realm of literature the same word typically refers to “a person and occasionally personified animal or idea that forwards the plot in a work of literature” . It is expected that characters in a piece of writing have just that - character. In some rare cases, however, the characters in an author’s work may lack distinctive personality traits that set them apart from others. One such of these cases is the book Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley. In this chapter we can tell that they are so dependent on having soma by how they react when the black cash box is brought into the room.
