Many people believe that Arabs and Muslims are one and the same but there is a difference. Arabs are an ethnic group that includes descendants from, Saudi Arabia, North Africa, Middle East, Iraq, Somalia, Morocco, and Syria. Muslims are a religious group that follows the teachings of Islam. Though both originated in the regions of the orient All Arabs are not Muslims and all Muslims are not Arabs.

After the September 11th terrorist attacks the United States made some changes to policies concerning the treatment of Muslim and Arabic members of society. These changes include closer monitoring of Muslim communities and activities, stronger airport security that unfortunately results in racial profiling of Muslims and Arabs.

Orientalism is the simplistic view of the people and history of the Orient with no recognition of change over time or the diversity within its many cultures (Shaefer, 2006). Because orientalism is dominated by imperatives, perspectives and ideological biases, (Sered, 1996) created by Westerns prejudice attitudes are forms and leads to discrimination and may be a breeding ground for hate crimes.
