Krakauer wrote that Chris McCandless was, "green, and he overestimated his resilience, but was sufficiently skilled to last for sixteen weeks on a little more than his wits and ten pounds of rice"(Krakauer 182). In this quote it seems that Krakauer thought that McCandless was well equipped with his skills, so that made moderately prepared to survive in any situation. I feel that McCandless was rather prepared, yet again he never could have been fully prepared for the unexpected. My opinion is that McCandless was vaguely aware of the struggles that he would encounter in the Alaskan wilderness such as his epiphany that "happiness is only real when shared" was realized when his body was dying of starvation. I believed that he found what he was…

In A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers, the audience can see how insecure Dave is about having to take the role of a parent for his little brother, Toph. Throughout the book Dave is constantly thinking about how everyone thinks that Dave shouldn’t be taking care of Christopher or he is an unfit parent. Dave wants to give the very best to Toph but most of the time that isn’t possible. For example, when they were looking for houses people were rejecting them saying the two weren’t the best fit or didn’t think they could pay. One landlord who was sceptical was unsure about Dave’s lack of job and their age. Dave responded “We can pay. We have money. We could pay the year’s rent all at once if you want” (76., which made the…

Throughout his entire time at Valley Forge, things were given to Wes to allow him to pick his pathway. This came to him through role models such as Captain Hill and Colonel Murphy, both of which gave him life lessons and inspiration. Even though Wes had a very strong hatred for the school at first, he grew to see how it would positively affect him. This was through his realization of what his family was doing for him, and what the people inspiring him were doing for him. Author Wes stated that Captain Hill had cared about his succession and wanted to help Wes come to value Valley Forge and what was offered. “They made it clear that they cared if I succeeded, and eventually so did I,” stated the author [115]. Looking at this evidence and using what we know from the book, we can directly see the impact of the people coming from Valley Forge had on Wes. As he learned people wanted him to succeed, he taught himself to value and care about the potential he has and the future he could have. The text portrays the idea that Valley Forge, as an extrinsic factor, is impacting Wes and his perception of his future. This is where his path becomes more detailed as he tries multiple paths such as basketball. Due to the desire for success and self-betterment, Valley Forge Military School has proven to be a major factor affecting…

The author writes about how both Wes’s lives could have been interchangeable. That his life could have led him to being behind bars, and the others Wes’s life could have been free and happy. I believe that they could have been interchanged. A major difference in their lives were there mentors. The type of mentors each of them had were very different. The author had mentors like his mother, grandparents, and aunt that pushed him to make decisions that would make his life even better than their own. The author looked up to his family seeing how strong they were in all of their life troubles. The other Wes had his mother and one friend that pushed him towards the right path but he didn’t look up to them. He looked up to his older brother who was already in all the trouble with gangs and drugs. This Wes wanted to be just like his brother, even though his brother tried to encourage Wes at a young age to not do what he does but do what he says. In the book, both Wes’s are sent away to try to create a better future for themselves. The author, who was sent to a military school, he at first wanted nothing to do with the school and continuously tried to run away. After getting brought into the office the last time and talking to his mother, Wes got the attention he needed while he was still young and he had men at the school to show him that his life is not set in stone. They proved to him that he does have control of his future. They showed him how to stay focused on what really matters in life. The author kept this military life style throughout his life which kept him around people who cared and kept him on the right path. The now incarcerated Wes, went to Job Corps. I believe this was one of the best choices that Wes made in his life. He went there to better himself and his family. He got his GED and became a carpenter. The only problem he had with this was when he came home he was making honest money but not “fast…

First and foremost, the director shows a classic example of a gangster working his way up literally from rags to riches. Tony starts out as a body guard for one of the big mobsters, and quickly learns that to get to the top in underground cocaine selling, you have to step all over people. The director correlates this advancement in status to the new American tradition of finding any way possible to get where you want in life. As Tony’s character ‘matures’ during the movie he gets greedier and more violent. His motto was the “World is yours” and believed the world and everything in it was primed for his taking. He climbs his way through the hierarchical ladder, surpassing his former bosses and he believes that he is on a pedestal alone.…
