Character Analysis: The Overlook Hotel
Every building has their ghosts, the Overlook Hotel just happens to have more than you would expect. Jack just lost his job thanks to his temper and drinking problem. In an attempt to keep his family together, he finds a job as a caretaker for the Overlook Hotel. At first, everything seems fine. Though as the up coming winter approaches, Jack will soon find out that the hotel has more problems then he bargained for, and that his son is a little more special then he was expecting. Visualizing, predicting, and ___ is what will be seen in this paper. Jack used to a have a drinking problem. Thanks to this, he ended up belligerent towards his wife and towards the kids he taught at collage. When one young man named George finally snaps, he decides …show more content…
Hedge animals have moved, the elevator that started with the sound of people talking about a party, the blood on the wall, and the lady in room 217 who sleeps in the tub. It had been noted that a lot of colorful people have indeed stayed at this hotel before. There were mafia, drug dealers, and so on and so forth. It would not be a surprised if someone had died here before. Both Jack and Danny have seen the hedge animals move at different times. They never actually see them more, but when they look over they are closer. The lady in the tub was seen by Danny, when he went in there after Hallorann told him not to. She was the only thing that physically was able to grab him with a grimace. “Still grinning, her hug marble eyes fixed on him, she was sitting up (King 320)”. My evaluation is that the hotel is haunted. That is obvious, though it seems like there are only a few spirits, or ghosts, that are bent on hurting them. Some, like the people at the party, just don’t mind them at all. Compared to the ghosts the other buildings seem to have, the Overlook Hotel holds more than you were expecting. From drinking problems to walking corpses living in a room’s tub, Jack’s luck seems to have taken a turn for the worst. After all of this, it’s great to see that they are so far still able to stay together as a family, though who knows if that will stay together. I think I should get a 7/10 on this paper since the word choice is still poor and the transitions are rough. I also haven’t written a journal in awhile so I explained more of the plot and did less with the predicting and so

In the book "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton, one of the character's Jonny killed a soca. He ends up running away in the end. That was his first mistake. You don't run away/ flee the town if you know you didn't do anything wrong. Self-defense means that there was nothing he could have done to prevent killing Bob (the soca). (Voluntary) Manslaughter, however, refers to intentionally killing the victim without planning it. In the book, Jonny states if a soca were to ever jump him again, then he would be ready to kill them. Even with that evidence, he still hasn't planned the way, when, or how he would kill someone. He also says "yeah. His voice was quivering slightly. I had to. They were drowning you ponyboy. They might have killed you." He…

Throughout the novella I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, Robert Neville, the last human who is immune to this disease, is an anti-hero. For instance, towards the end of the story, during his state of confusion after he woke up, he felt pain that he had not ever felt before and thought that it must mean it was the end and said to himself ‘’I am going to die’’ (p.164). This statement shows that he accepts that his life will end here and he will not try to fight it in any way in order to continue surviving. In addition to this, after he realizes where he is and what happened, Ruth came to check on him and asks him why he did not leave beforehand like she told him to in the letter she left him. Robert explained to her ‘’I…couldn’t […] I almost…

The Gibbard Block is the establishing shot of a horror film where a nice young couple chooses to honeymoon local in an elegant building that’s lasted more than a century. It’s romantic in a way that suggests some things withstand weather and time with grace. Branded with age, the block stands regal, all weathered red brick and cornice brackets, colored off-white by the time they’ve spent exposed. The first tier of the block is adorned with a green awning, the second, a neon sign that reads La Boheme in legible cursive. In spite of its charm, it’s not hard to imagine that a place that’s survived this long might have a ghost or two.…

Kesey and Darabont explore the constant battle between hope and oppression, a prominent theme throughout One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Shawshank Redemption, respectively. Both utilise a wide range of techniques, such as messianic imagery, symbols, and a size-motif developing the influence of power. The battle between hope and oppression is constant throughout the two texts by each author, in unique ways and different perspectives, through which the audience gains the understanding that hope and oppression come hand in hand with life.…

Elevators and a set of creepy stairs. Martin a thin twelve-year-old moved into the creepy hotel, he (Martin) said, “Of course he was always uncomfortable in Elevators, afraid that they would fall, but there was something especially unpleasant about this one.” Maybe the dimensions of the contraption that bothered him, so small that it felt uncomfortably crowded even when there was only one other person in it.…

When the people of El Dorado happen upon Tulio and Miguel outside the city, they lead them into El Dorado because the two closely resemble a depiction of gods. This prompts Tulio and Miguel to keep up the act. Eventually, the people of El Dorado pay tribute to the two fake gods in gold. Excited that their scheme has proven itself successful, Tulio says to Miguel that, “We just have to keep this up long enough to load up on the gold and then get the hell out of here!” (The Road to El Dorado). Tulio has to constantly remind Miguel that, “We are pretending to be gods,” so their true identities would not be revealed to the people of El Dorado and they would be able to escape with the gold.…

The outside was white with bricks showing through suggesting the building had probably been there some time. The lobby was several shades of brown except an out of place brightly multicolored cabinet that was in the corner. I was reminded of old books and newspapers as the lobby seemed to be made out of dust in the best way possible and it smelled like warm cinnamon. A sign on the wall offered apartments and hotel rooms. Despite the wooden vacancy sign hung outside, no one came out to greet us in the fifteen or so minutes we waited. We eventually called it and took off down the road. As we walked farther down Wright street and tried to avoid the small amounts of traffic we came across a few abandoned buildings, a photographer’s dream. Cracks and crevasses ran up and down the walls and vines crept up the sides of the buildings, wound their way through the cracks and and bursting through the windows that had been boarded up with wood that had begun to rot. My curiosity was peaked and it took a lot of self control to not find a way in to further explore the buildings but through the remaining dirty windows I could see a lot of old wood and what looked like trash on the floor. The building on the end was especially peculiar for it had the remnants of some poster that had been hung there once upon a time but now all that’s left are some eyes. They seemed to watch you wherever you went and they reminded me of the eyes of Doctor…

The new arrival of three servants at the house — an aging nanny and servant named Mrs. Bertha Mills ,an elderly gardener named Mr. Edmund Tuttle, and a young mute girl named Lydia — coincides with a number of odd events, and Grace begins to fear that they are not alone. Anne draws pictures of four people: a man, a woman, a boy called Victor, and an old woman, all of whom she says she has seen in the house. A piano is heard from inside a locked room when no one is inside. Grace finds and examines a "book of the dead," which shows mourning portraits taken in the 19th century of recently deceased corpses. I was so shocked when the doors which Grace believes to have been closed are found mysteriously ajar. Grace tries hunting down the "intruders" with a shotgun but cannot find them. She scolds her daughter for believing in ghosts — until she hears them herself. Eventually, convincing herself that something unholy is in the house, she runs out in the fog to get the local priest to bless the house. Meanwhile,…

    What Could Have Happened

Plenty of years before the actual Jack visited the hotel, someone had already been there. The funny thing is that it’s someone who looks like him. Anybody could swear it’s him. But how is it possible? More than 40 years had passed and the man in the picture (who looks like he’s in his mid-forties) was still alive and all, visiting the hotel (again)? Some old people living in the town, who were relatively close to the hotel owners, say that nobody really knew the man in the picture. His smile is scary, and when you realize it’s someone who nobody could identify, and the fact that you were there when the picture was taken, you don’t know how to react. The hotel and the town itself are famous due to its mental sanity shortage nowadays. According to a 1922 census, more than forty percent of the inhabitants suffered from nightmares and hallucinations, which in most cases ended in dementia. Most patients would often talk about a man who would speak to them every time winter came. Voices, that is. There’s no real explanation to what could have happened before it all begun or what could have caused dementia all of sudden to these people. It doesn’t make sense, it’s true that nobody knows how it started, but at the same time, they all look like they know something they can’t decipher, and the ones who are still healthy only want to forget everything related to it.…

I pushed open the door of the black iron fence and a shrill screech sounded as I closed it behind me. As I walked up the narrow driveway I could see my breath hanging in the cool morning air. The house was old, the windows were boarded up and had cobwebs in every corner. The bare trees scratched and scraped against the large, dark house, as the wind howled below. I zipped up my jacket when the wind started to pick up and then took out the key my grandfather had once given me, I carefully slid it into the gold padlock on the doors. As I was about to open the door the strong winter wind took another blow and opened it for me, it unveiled the once beautiful mansion that now collects dust. The old wooden floors creaked and whined as I carefully walked in. All the furniture was covered in white sheets, I could almost taste the dust in my mouth as I pulled off a sheet from one of the chairs. It smelled dirty and musty. I started to uncover other things, like paintings and other furniture. Yet out of all the things I found, my two favorites were a handmade grandfather clock and an old bookcase! I like the grandfather clock because it filled the creepy silence of the house with a slow, yet graceful “Tick-Tock.” The bookcase I liked because the books make a beautiful display even with the gritty and dusty covers. The crinkly pages were fragile, so I carefully handled them while trying to read the faded words. Then I saw the magnificent gold staircase! I felt the cold slippery brass railing as I walked up the winding staircase, as I found another floor my curiosity grew even more, and I started my adventure all over again... The house was marvelous truly…

There was a horrible storm that night, but apart from that nothing scary happened. The nextmorning, however, when the family came down to breakfast, they found the terrible stain of bloodonce again on the floor. Washington cleaned it a second time, but the second morning it appearedagain. The third morning it was there, too, although the library had been locked up at night by Mr Otis himself. The following night, all doubts about the existence of the ghost were finally removed forever. Ateleven o'clock the family went to bed and some time after, Mr Otis was awakened by a strangenoise in the corridor, outside his room. It sounded like the clank of metal, and it came nearer everymoment. Mr Otis got up and looked at the time. It was exactly one o'clock. So Mr Otis put on hisslippers, went to the door and opened it. There, right in front of him, stood the ghost - his eyeswere as red as burning coals; long grey hair fell over his shoulders and from his wrists and ankleshung heavy chains.³My dear Sir,´ said Mr Otis, ³you must oil those chains. It's impossible to sleep with such a noisegoing on outside the bedrooms. I have therefore brought you this bottle of lubricator, and I will behappy to supply you with more if you require it.´ With these words Mr Otis laid the bottle down, closed his door and went back to bed.Shocked, the Canterville ghost stood quite motionless for a moment, but then he growled angrily.Just at this moment, the twins appeared on the corridor and threw a large pillow at him! The ghosthastily escaped through the wall, and the house became quiet again. When the ghost reached his small secret chamber, he took a deep breath. No ghosts in history hadever been treated in this…
