Great Uncle Jim Bethea accommodated in World War II in the 1st Infantry Division or the “Big Red One”, after its shoulder patch. His unit was under cumbersomely hefty fire by the Germans when he was suddenly wounded, shot straight through the chest, and then captured by the Germans somewhere in Italy after his unit was overrun. When he was with the German squad that captured him, he descried the shape they were in, starving and wounded. Optically discerning the opportunity, Jim convinced them to surrender by telling them that the Americans would aliment them and forfend them.
