Chapter Summary And Symbolism In Battle Royal
1) Symbol In chapter 15, the narrator comes across a coin bank when leaving Mary's house. The coin bank is a figurine is of a grinning black man, who when a coin is placed in its hand and a lever is pushed, tosses the coin into his mouth. This is not only derrogative on how society viewed the african americans but also symbolic in how the narrator has experienced the race being not only treated negatively, but regarded in terms of unequality and in a sense, bottom feeders. More specifically, this can relate to the Battle Royal where the young black boys scavvanged up their winnings on the electrified carpet infront of an audiance that was mainly wealthy white people. To the white men, this exemplified the black men's despair to grab up any money they could, in a humiliating mannor, which was supplied by the white man himself. I think this symbol is significant because it symbolizes the reoccuring issue of black men being lesser equals of the white man, and it doesn't allow the narrator to forget about his "place" in society, …show more content…

Ahead of me a huge electric sign announced its message through the drifiting strands of fog.... Flags were fluttering in the breeze from each other in a maze of buildings below the sign, and for a moment it was like watching some vast patriotic ceremony from a distance. But no shots were fired and no bugles sounded (pg. 196)"
" I was sitting in a cold, white rigid chair and a man was looking at me out of a bright third eye that glowed from the center of his forehead. He reached out, touching my skull gingerly, and said something encouraging, as though i were a child. his fingers went away (pg

In the first stanza the speaker is traveling through a field covered in snow. The snow represents cold, blankness, and winter time. The speaker says, "Snow falling and night falling fast, oh, fast" (Line 1). This gives a visual picture that the snow represents cold, blankness, and winter, while the nightfall gives images of vast darkness that describes the speaker's complete emptiness and state of loneliness. The speaker then continues to provoke feelings of emptiness and loneliness. The speaker states that, “the ground almost covered smooth in snow, but a few weeds and stubble showing last” (3-4). This represents how the snow is covering the grass and is showing how the snow is creating a blankness that shows loneliness, but also shows how life still goes on because not the entire field is covered in snow. Then the speaker reflects that no one is untouched. The speakers states that “all animals are smothered in their lairs” (Line6). The word “smothered” shows how nature is blanketed with emptiness.…

There are many symbols in the story; for example, black cigar, tuxedos, and the flag tattoo. The flag tattoo represents the American dream, something that the black boys were not able to have or achieve. The unknown narrator is one of the brighter students in the community and is given the opportunity to give a speech, but to give the speech, he has to go through many difficulties. First, he had to fight his other colored boys and second, he got electrocuted attempting to pick up coins— which turned out to be fake. The whole process of going through the trial is symbolic because the black community had to go through many troubles to gain freedom, and even after gaining freedom, they did not have it any easier because they were still discriminated…

A symbol represented in the book is a white apron. A white apron represents the help since that is what they have to wear everyday of their lives while working for their white peoples. The idea a white apron represents is the injustice black people have to deal with from the day they're born to the day they die. It also conveys the differences between blacks and whites. White ladies got to wear their fancy dresses and get their hair done up all nice while walking around in their pretty heels. Whites were treated…

All people in their lives went through the celebration of the Christmas. And today I want to talk about a poem that was written by Jean Reidy "Christmas". Just from the poem's name we can get the information, that the poem itself will talk about the Christmas. This poem contains many poetic devices, but I will talk about just three of them. They are personification, repetition and hyperbole.…

The short story “battle royal” theme based upon a coming of age story. Which depicts an African American male who is attempting to find himself, while in a time where slavery has ended and segregation is not yet a distant memory. When he was younger he was exposed to his grandfather’s dying words, which evidently reveals that his grandfather behavior was all a ruse. His grandfather portrayed a meek old man playing a role which he believed was required to suit his situation, being an African American male in a white dominated society. He played this role to hide his true feelings towards the outside world and kept his true identity within to stave off any hardships. The grandfather characterized himself to be a spy in a hostile environment this…

An Old Man's Winter Night is written by the American poet Robert Frost in 1916. He went through a lot of tragedies during the whole life. After experiencing the death his mother, his grandfather and his 2 children, the sense of helpness inevitably worked to shape and color the views of life’s possibilities. It’s unforeseeable for Frost to predict what will happen tomorrow so that he was called “a poet who terrifies”. That’s why the peotry is a mix of the calm and rural. The peaceful surface with an underlying darkness is an uncommon feature in this poetry.…

As winter comes around the days grow short and the nights grow long. In “The Darkling Thrush,” the first stanza begins by referring to winter and how nature once beauty is now gone in the flash of an eye. In lines two and three, Hardy capitalizes the words “Frost” (2) and “Winter” (3) and he personifies how he uses the capitalizations. He describes the frost as being “specter grey” (2) and the winter as being “dregs made desolate” (3). They are personifications because he describes them as being less like natural elements but rather more like a person’s name. He uses winter as a metaphor for death and uses subtle messages in reference to the grim reaper. Hardy also uses the words “coppice,” (1) “specter,” (2) and “weakening” (4) to describe how the ice is cracking during the winter months with the hard k sounds. As the poem moves on towards the end, it begins to talk about rebirth and how with every death things are reborn.…

So, he played with that child, the whole day long, and they were very merry. The sky was so blue, the sun was so bright, the water was so sparkling, the leaves were so green, the flowers were so lovely, and they heard such singing-birds and saw so many butteries, that everything was beautiful. This was in fine weather. When it rained, they loved to watch the falling drops, and to smell the fresh scents. When it blew, it was delightful to listen to the wind, and fancy what it said, as it came rushing from its home-- where was that, they wondered!--whistling and howling, driving the clouds before it, bending the trees, rumbling in the chimneys, shaking the house, and making the sea roar in fury. But, when it snowed, that was best of all; for, they liked nothing so well as to look up at the white flakes falling fast and thick, like down from the breasts of millions of white birds; and to see how smooth and deep the drift was; and to listen to the hush upon the paths and roads.…
