Chapter Eight Team Dynamics Paper
The video Build a tower, build a team by Tom Wujec (2010) is very engaging, the information discussed correlated well with the text presented in Chapter Eight Team Dynamics. Both discuss how team building activities have been effective in helping the team learn to work as a cohesive group, promote creativity and facilitate better communication skills. Tom Wujec (2010) discuss the “Marshmallow Challenge”, an exercise where people are placed into teams to build the tallest tower out of spaghetti, tape, and a single marshmallow. Chapter Eight explains different team dynamics such as why people join informal groups and describe the “five C’s of member behavior in the effect teams. I will discuss some of the problems that my team faced in the workplace when we were presented with a team building exercise and discuss my understanding of the marshmallow challenge.

Both challenges required the Five Cs of Team Member Competency; cooperating, coordinating, communicating, comforting and conflict solving to have a desirable outcome. They both had a similar objective, demonstrated the importance of creativity and collaboration between team members in the workplace. Both challenges were presented as being very simple challenges, with clear directions so that everyone understood them, but once the teams began their challenge they soon understood it wasn’t as easy as they perceived it to be and a couple of our team members began social loafing.
