Chapter 3 Promoting Children's Art
After reading chapter 3, Promoting Children’s Art, I would begin by explaining to my friend that all children are artistic and talented in their own unique way. I would also tell her that she should observe her child’s artwork that he/she does at home and artwork that is done at school. As explained in the book on page 41, children who are gifted will show great detail in their artwork that children their age would not pay attention to. Students that are artistic and talented go deep into thought with their artwork. Not only do the show the interest in art with their drawings, they will talk about their interest in particular topics not common to those of their peers. Another way to tell if her child is artistic and talented is to talk with

The first art work chosen was a figure by Myron of Athens, Discobolous. The Discobolous, a Discus Thrower, is a Roman marble copy after a bronze original of 450 BCE. A picture of this piece is shown below, figure 1. This piece of art work is simply amazing and exemplifies the Greek sense of harmony and balance (Petronius, 2008). The artist depicted the statutes of that time, a male nude figure, which seems to express freedom of movement and the Greeks idea of beauty. Furthermore, this artwork exemplifies the role of the artist through a representation of human strength and values.…

As thought by NACCCE, when being imaginative in art, it should be of a non-routine form. This non-routine form will help the children to become more creative and also will help them to express themselves. Being able to express themselves and to be independent within their work helps to build on the ‘esteem needs’ of Maslow’s hierarchy. Also within imagination, children are beginning to use originality and thinking of ideas themselves, this helping them to realize their own identity.…

Therefore, children can understand their artistic preferences thereby develop pride and confidence in their work. Painting easels will allow the children to communicate and express their feelings without using words. The easel paintings will serve as a social experience to provide the children with the opportunity to connect through shared interest. As the children observe their peers paint different easels, they will be inspired by the symbols, shapes, lines, color choices, and techniques of others. Therefore, the children will learn self-expression through collaboration, such as sharing techniques and ideas to paint together at the same…

The exceptionally creative may need a different approach when it comes to their development. The gifted need to be treated with patience and given room to grow their talents. In My Name is Asher Lev, Asher’s parents are not very supportive of his gifts. His mother is the more supportive of the two. She can relate to Asher’s problem of wanting to grow in his art and the communities disapproval. She even buys him paint at one point and takes him to an art museum. When he asks his mother questions that she fears may corrupt his Jewish faith she can no longer accept his gifts in front of his father. Eventually she supports him by saying, “You and your father are two different natures. There is nothing to be done about it, Asher Lev...Do not try to understand, Become a great artist. That is the only way to justify what you are doing to everyone's life.”(Potok) In school, a place that should be a refuge of learning and peace Asher's Headmaster remarks “Many people feel they are in possession of a great gift when they are young. But one does not always have to give in to a gift. One does with a life not only what is precious to one's self, but to one's own people. That is the way our people live...”(Potok) This notion that a gift should be ignored for a civic responsibility is incredibly ignorant and short sided. The headmaster has no idea the incredible things…

Even if they get criticized on their drawing, it's something an individual should enjoy doing instead of worrying about what others think. When children draw, they express their ideas and it shows the creativity that goes on in their head. Like Barry said “Without the two questions so much is possible. To all the kids who quit drawing...come back!” (Barry 68). Meaning if you just draw and write without the acknowledgement of what others think about your own work, then you will feel more pleased about your own piece of work. Which makes you more passionate about what you’re doing. For Barry ever since her mother got a call from school about the inappropriate she drew, it changed her life around. She realized she made a terrible mistake and after that “For the next 30 years I chased after only good drawing” (Barry 63). Thus resulting in her being more concerned about only having good drawings and stories. “I never drew for fun anymore” (Barry 63), all that time she was trying to perfect her own work for others and made sure others liked what she was doing instead of having that mind set of doing it out of her own…
