Chapter 14 Q&A: Are We a Team?
Are We a Team?
1. What type of team does the new CIO have? What do you see as the key problem with the team?
The new CIO has a cross-functional team, the team is including employees from the same hierarchical level but form different departments and expertise. They all working towards a common goal. They are 14 who are regional IT persons and department heads. The problem I fee is that there is lack of cooperation. Everyone seems to be working on their tasks but no one is realizing about the common goal. Moreover, the remarks given by team members show lack of trust and respect. It is difficult to manage the cross-functional team. For this manager have to build a strong communication channel and trust among all the team member so they can achieve their goals.
2. How do you think the team evolved to this low level of cooperation and cohesiveness?
In my point of view team evolved to this low level of cooperation and cohesiveness because of poor communication, lack of leadership and selfishness. As most of the team members are thinking about their own achievement not company’s goal. They people didn’t share information to achieve collective goals.
Team cohesiveness is defined as the extent to which team members are attracted to the team and motivated. It means every team member has commitment to team activities, support other team members and enjoy team’s success.
This team has lack of leadership, as there is no interaction and gap of communication that is why they don’t know about shared goal. The former CIO always agreed with everyone but he didn’t convey shared goals this the main reason that team members are not clear about their goals. The former CIO failed to shape such rules that can helped him to make an effective and productive team.
3. What suggestions do you have for the CIO to help her turn this collection of individual regional and department heads into a top-performing team? Explain.
Well as a management student, I will suggest her the following

When it comes to teamwork, most people will consider teamwork in terms of being part of a baseball, basketball, or football team. In contrast, a team is “really just a group of people who use their skills, experience, and knowledge to work toward a common goal” (Beverly K. Bachel, 2007). Teams working together in the workplace are extremely productive and profitable. Teams working together increase problem-solving skills and innovation, quality, and decrease turnover and absenteeism. (Scarnati, J 2006) Teams have an overall high success rate when well structured and the communication between the team members stays open throughout the project. A team is a collection of individuals who have gathered to achieve the same…

I am currently in charge of 328 Soldiers that are tasked with teaching various aviation military occupations to include initial and advance flight training. Within my organization I have groups (sections) that work effective and efficiently toward a common goal. This goal is to ensure that the U.S. Army receives the best training enlisted and pilots possible. As a senior leader, my job is to create and establish teams that are not only effective but are able to sustain their successes. As I read through the text, I can see how helpful this book can provide insight on understanding the dynamics of team building within any organization. When I assumed responsibility over a year ago the first stage was evident within peers and members of my team. We all had the vision to move the organization forward. Eventually we moved into the second stage and conflicts began as members changed and new visions came into the picture. As the senior leader in the organization, I have to implement changes rules and regulations that were not received in a positive manner. Although it took time, trust, and hard work we were able to work out our differences and move the team forward for the better of the organization. Once trust was established, the team was able to move forward in achieving goals set by the members of the…
