The Workforce is Changing

BUSM 533-A - 1209 - Managing Human Resources

Instructor: Steven Hood
October 30, 2012

Introduction:
It is no surprise that the workforce is on the move and changing at a growing rate. There are several factors that lead into the changing workforce and play important roles. There are the workers who are leaving, the ones who will be staying and the new ones who will be entering, all of which have an important role to play in the US economy. This topic is important but it seems to weigh a little more heavily during an election period like we are in now. When the unemployed rate is high and the national debt is at an unprecedented amount it makes me wonder, who will our job force consist of and how will it be changing?
Some of the important things that need to be considered when looking into how the workforce is changing is who is now entering the workforce that was not previously in it? How will this affect competition for jobs? Are education levels affecting the workforce? Childcare and Eldercare seem to be playing an increasing role in who works and who stays at home to care for their families, will this change? More minorities are also working in the US making a big change to the workforce, how does this play out with HRM and other parts of management?
All of the questions and statements above need to be answered in order to find out why the workforce is changing and who comprises the majorities now. The workforce today is much more different than just 20 years ago. It is important as a human resource manager to stay up to date on these things and to know what the coming trends are for who you might be looking to employ.
Significance of the topic to the field of Human Resource Management:
The effects of the changing workforce on Human Resource managers are quite large. As of 2007 in healthcare there are older workers than younger ones. The issues arise in HRM with this when the technology is changing and

Recruitment and retention of competent, skilled candidates that meet mandatory staffing ratios adds to the list of challenges HR professional will face (Aberdeen Group, 2012). Lacking qualified applicants to fill positions within the organization, human resources have turned to training and development to heighten the skills of current qualified workforce, while offering desirable salary and benefits packages to retain young workers (Minton-Eversole, 2011). Anticipated changes in demographics and social conditions will greatly influence the approach taken by HR professionals with the millions of individuals reaching retirement age. (Minton-Eversole, 2011). Many of these individuals in the workforce are not prepared financially for retirement; eliminating the chances for younger recruits to enter the profession (Minton-Eversole, 2011). Forecasted…

According to United States Department of Labor, over the next decade there will be some important changes to the demographic trends within the workforce. It is predicted that the labor force will continue to diversify because immigration accounts for most of the population growth. It is predicted that by 2020 non-Hispanic workers will make up only 68 percent of the workforce (Lerman & Schmidt, page 4).…

In 1946, America received its first round of baby boomers that continued for the course of 18 years in which more than seventy-nine million babies were born. With that being said, most of the first round of baby boomers are turning 66 this year while the last flood of baby boomers will turn 48 (About.com.Geography ). With this becoming a reality for many employers it is no wonder that management faces many new challenges. However, this challenge is around to stay. Many employers are faced with the first wave of baby boomers to have faced retirement last year and many more to come in the following years. This is alarming because in order to receive full retirement benefits you must be 65, however, you may start receiving benefits at the age of 62. In 1983, the government passed a law making the retirement age gradually higher until those born after 1959 will need to be 67 to receive full retirement benefits (Social Security Online). The havoc this creates for management is the fact that it with the retirement age increasing it means that employers must find way to keep the aging workforce satisfied. With this comes many challenges including learning how to manage an aging workforce, training the elder employees to ever changing rules and regulations, and training the new employees that are taking over positions.…

The Baby Boomers are a globally recognized cohort of individuals who were born post World War II, between 1943 and 1960 (Salahuddin, 2011). This shockwave of births resulted in the second highest births per year with 1.5 million more births than had been expected (Salahuddin, 2011). 60 years later, the boomers are in the midst of their transition towards retirement from their careers and this trend will result in nearly the largest wave of retirement that our continent has experienced. The implications of this wave have been expected and planned for, but until the consequences are realized in the 21st century economy, there is little that can be done to prepare for this economical shift. Though the effects will be experienced globally, this paper will focus on the Canadian and American economies. The ideas behind this topic are worthy of discussion as is evident by looking at research on the topic to date. The North American implications are numerous so it seems necessary to reduce the exploration of the topic to what are perceived to be the most drastic impacts in terms of organization theory. The position of this paper will be that though the wave of retirement will occur and will result in an economic and societal shift, it will not be detrimental to the staffing levels of large corporations. It will, however, have significant impacts on the day-to-day operations of organizations as they adapt to the differing work styles and preferences of the new and upcoming demographics. Additionally, the major impact that this wave will have will be on the human resource functions of the organizations, as they fight the combat of high turnover, restructuring, and the effective implementation of these changes.…

Today many companies are enduring the challenge of hiring, training, and retaining employees. Globalization has raised the demand to acquire talent that matches the need of organizations. Labor pools abroad are starting to create a job market where average American salaries are far less with the competition. As the baby boomers defer retirement the worker supply is projected to become smaller. Many workers now are opting to have more of balance between leisure activity and work. Skilled workers are at a minimum. A large swing in the attitude toward work of the current generation has been very poor. Finally, many companies are experiencing high employee turnover rates as workers are jumping jobs to find better pay or benefits.…

The nation’s workforce has experienced some traumatic events over the past seven years. Between the financial disasters, global competition, and the slow pace of domestic economic growth, is it any wonder that employment in the United States is not meeting standards? Yet the biggest challenge of all may be right around the corner as the baby boomers retire in bulk. “Following World War II, women in the United States had babies in unprecedented numbers, beginning in 1946 with 3.4 million births. Although an increase in birthrate is a normal occurrence following a war, this boom continued unabated for almost twenty years, peaking in 1957 with a record 4.3 million births and ending in 1964” (Brown). Over the next twenty years, this huge cohort…

At the onset of the new millennium, the workplace is different from the workplace that we knew at the time when work had evolved so much as to be called a "career", meaning, when work had become more than just a means of livelihood for people included in the workforce. When "jobs" became "careers", people began to feel that more was at stake with their respective workplaces than just their salaries. This gave way to the first generation of workforce that would put new meaning in the workplace, and will be followed by three more generations, and each would bring new and unique dynamics to the workplace.…
