Changing my name
All my life I have viewed myself as a weak individual. Someone who was easily stepped on and

walked all over. I always wanted to stand up for myself but I had no idea how. I was never

very competitive and I had very little self-discipline. I wanted to change this desperately but, I

felt like it was to late in my life to just suddenly change. I felt like I needed a motivation. That is

why I am here today, to explain to you why I changed my name to Nina. When I was a little girl I

recall my mother always telling me that I had Native American blood in me. I was fascinated by

the thought of being a real Native American, the history of these natives just intrigued me for

some reason. They seemed to be these strong willed people, despite their land being taken

from them. In my mind I have created this picture of them being highly intelligent and nothing

nor anyone can stop them from doing what they were driven to do. The meaning of the name

Nina is “strong”. I chose this name because the word strong seems so powerful to me.

It took me a long time to settle with the name I chose. I needed a name that was going to

not sound strong but make my personality stronger. Now Nina has the ability to experience

negative and positive events without judgment. Nina has the strength to go through obstacles

and come out without harboring negative baggage. Being strong lets me go through any kind of

drama and stress with victory. Instead of letting any negative situation bring me down, I fight

back. I can now speak for myself without feeling like I am going to be judged. Being strong

through adversity is an excellent tactic. Individuals such as Mother Teressa, Martin Luther King,

and Gandhi all changed the world by staying strong and going through arduousness. These

are people who are perfect proof of how strength can make such a difference in the way a

person can change society. Before I changed my name I would ask myself, Do

weather was never over 85° and milk was more expensive then gas. My whole name is Helen Lonsdale Torrey but I always just liked Lonnie. My name is from a tradition in our family that has been in practice since the 1820s. The first daughter of the first daughter is named after the grandmothers middle name and that daughters middle name was the maiden name of the grandmother. Every generation the name Helen is exchanged for Hetty of the first born daughter. There is a silver cup with all of the names and dates of birth of those first born daughters; I am on that cup to be remembered forever.…

In this article, Walter Fleming argues that because Native Americans are such a small minority in the United States, most Americans are not properly educated or have limited knowledge of Native Americans. Based on the lack of knowledge people tend to get stereotype using information from popular culture instead of actually fact. “Stereotyping is a poor substitute for getting to know individuals at a more intimate, meaningful level”. (Myths and Stereotypes About Native Americans, Walter C. Fleming, Pg. 1) Fleming also hopes to offer his perspective on what he considers the most important, teachers and others might keep in mind when measuring curriculum, developing lesson plans, or teaching Indian children. He details seven myths, which Native people encountered on an almost daily basis, and presents best practice for those teaching Native students.…

On August 28th, 1998 I was born at Adena hospital in Chillicothe, Ohio. My parents named me Josie Dawn Hackney because of my grandpa and step-grandpa. Josie comes from Joseph and Dawn comes from Donald. I used to hate my name but when I found out when where it came from, then I realized how much it means to my mom now my name just kind of grew with me. I was a 7 pound 8-ounce baby and that is kind of big to be a 5-week early twin. Since I was brought home from the hospital, I have lived in Oak Hill, Ohio my whole life. After we are born, we receive our own names. Names are chosen not by themselves, but by their family member’s. That is the first gift the baby owns and of course, it is free, but not everybody takes the free gift if they don't like it. Just like me and the girl I had read about in the article, “My Name," by Sandra Cisneros. We both don’t like our names because our names are not English names; indeed, it’s the different culture name.…

A fighter, That's what some people call me. Family, friends, people I don't even really know. They call me a fighter because I fight in my head, against something that can be way more powerful than me. If I win a fight, they call me a fighter because I overcame it, I faced it and won. If I loose, They call me a fighter because I get back on my feet and face it again. There is an infinite amount of rounds. I am almost always fighting. Fighting for my freedom, my happiness, fighting for an amazing life. How do I not give up after 11 years? How do I not get tired? Cause I believe I am strong. I believe that life is a game. Birthmarks go far beyond an irregularity of the skin. These are those in one's life that define how a person is seen by society since the day he or she was born. Starting by skin color and followed by the reputation and capital owned by that individual's family, society defines a person by what is exposed for them to see. There are some of these marks that no matter how hard one tries, are impossible to change; last names being one of them. Quite few people care about what their last name really means. Last names are most commonly accepted and owned as they are, without the necessity of changing them, and seen as those who have been simply passed down by generations. It doesn’t go far beyond that… for most people. This was my case until the day I got interrogated at the airport when an…

There is no limit on what someone’s name can mean, whether it to them or someone else. In Trikatikningsih Byas’s “Where the Land is Stepped On, The Sky Above Must be Upheld”, Byas talks about the importance of her name and what the meaning of it is to her culture. The first part of her name indicates the order of her birth compared to her siblings, the second part is the meaning or source of her name, and the last part told whether she was a male or female (Byas 33). In different cultures names can have more and more significant meanings than most people would think. There are examples in Japanese names where their names mean other things whether it be moon, love, serenity, etc. Someone’s name is what they will usually be called for the rest of their life. No matter where they go in life they will always have a name that belongs to them. There are some who reject their name and refuse to use it.…
