Change the World
If I could change one thing about what I see in the world I would not know where to start because there are so many issues with the world I wish I could change. Although there are many choices to pick from, I really wish I could change society. The people in this world are very selfish and inconsiderate to everyone surrounding them.

My biggest issue with society is how it is based on appearance. People are so quick to judge everyone on what they wear or what they look like. I wish people were not so quick to judge because people are so much more than just what they look like. If people did not judge others on appearance I believe that everyone would truly be happier.

I have been very lucky to have been raised by such a great mom. She has taught me how to be respectful, responsible, honest, grateful, and basically has made me who I am. Unfortunately, not many people in my generation have had the same wonderful opportunity. Children nowadays are very disrespectful towards adults and it really bothers me, even though I am child myself. Society is allowing children to disrespect their friends, teachers, families, and even themselves. It is sad hearing my friends talk about "having a good time" by drinking, smoking or doing drugs. I think most of this, not all of it, falls back onto the parenting and simply not disciplining their children at home and trying too much to be their friends.

Being a woman, I despise that society is sexualized and has particular gender roles. Especially being an athlete I am tired of hearing "...but you are a girl" or "... you cannot play that sport" and my least favorite is "...I am better than you because you are a girl." It is very annoying that men do not think women are as good as them at sports simply due to the fact that we are women! Sadly, this is also seen in the corporate world. Majority of CEOs are men because in society men are suppose to be "in charge." This is also seen in Congress where only 98 of the 535

Although gender discrimination is hidden with the other social norms, it is present and has a great impact on the daily lives of both men and women. Sexism has a similar effect on society like bacteria; while it may be beneficial for some, it can be harmful to others. This concept is what creates the significant gap between genders, while giving the impression that one gender, generally the male, is superior to the other. Sexism has made its way into a part of daily life; it is simply inevitable for the general population to follow the typical roles, established since the beginnings of the development of humanity. The basic foundations of the roles of men and women are heavily influenced by sexism; therefore, gender discrimination is clearly…

“There should be no distinction between typical masculine and feminine occupations, and the traits of character should not be ascribed once and for all one gender.” said Malgarzata Walsh of krytyka.org. Stereotyping and gender roles have played a prevalent role not only in our modern society but throughout history. Webster’s dictionary defines gender or sex roles as “the behaviors, attitudes, and activities expected or common for males and females”. Gender roles have been defining societal norms for both males and females since the beginning of civilization. We view the “normal” to be submissive, emotional women who are useful for nothing more than cooking, cleaning, and staying home to care for the children; while men are looked upon as the proud, strong, manly, and sole provider for the family. While in recent years, certain people and organizations have been working hard to cease the use of these stereotypical roles, they are still very common throughout television, film, literature, and advertisement.…

How would you feel if you got told you couldn’t wear a specific article of clothing, or weren’t allowed to like a specific colour, or even something as simple as not being comfortable with sharing your favourite animal for you feel you will be called names and made fun of? All of these are examples of gender roles, and it’s all around us, we just don’t notice it. I decided my ISU should be on the broad topic of gender roles, and gender inequality for a couple of reasons. Mainly I feel that nowadays, gender inequality, along with gender roles, are almost everywhere, but no one seems to care, or feels the desire…

    Sexism In Society

Many people do not understand that everyone is equal whether they are a man or a woman. Although gender is not only defined by being male or female, sexism when it comes to gender is a very disappointing thing that actually happens amongst humanity. Sexism is something that not only I have faced so many times in my life but that a lot of my friends around the world have also faced. Being a girl in the 21st century, not only have I endured an insane amount of sexism but have also seen it happen first hand. Even though not everyone believes in social equality between man and woman, I personally do. Gender has impacted me so much in my life and growing up in a male dominant household, with male dominate family members I was always being babied and told to “just sit and look pretty” while the “men” did all of the “hard work.”…

Popular Culture in the form of media does not always do a fair job of reflecting accurate characteristics of men and women. Society has added to this by creating what is known as gender roles among men and women. They are like a type of social guidelines which men and women follow in order to be accepted by today's society. Although this was designed with the best intentions it can have negative results.…

Our society has been taught that gender roles are inherent, biological and behavioral characteristics. This belief is perpetuated through mass media, toys, clothing trends, advertisements, architecture, food and virtually everything else around us. This process begins at birth and continues through adulthood. These gender roles that society has set before us before us can be demeaning and create obstacles as well.…

The devaluation of women is built into the culture all through industry and popular culture. When a baby is born he/she is like a blank slate to be written on by his/her surroundings, including family and society. For example, I am a Christian, however I was not born a Christian, going to Church and being taught about the Bible by my parents and teachers brought me to identify myself as a Christian. There are certain gender roles that are set up in societies that limit males and females to certain behaviors they are "supposed" to portray. The media in many cultures, particularly American culture, continues make the devaluation of females more "socially acceptable".…

While some might argue that gender roles are outdated and no longer politically correct or even followed by people I would have to disagree. I think we can look around almost everyday of our lives and see people following social norms that are set based on their gender. For instance, police officers and fire fighting are still widely male professions. While more women are seeking employment in these professions they are still widely outnumbered by men. If you look at nursing there are far more female nurses than there are male…

Most people feel that the qualities and characteristics we perceive as specific to gender are inherent by nature. In America, physical strength is stereotyped to be masculine, while emotional behavior is stereotyped as feminine. Any straying from these expectations is sufficient grounds for alienation. However, historian Howard Zinn has documented that gender roles are a part of a system constructed by the ruling class during the formation of our nation. The gender role structure in the US was designed in order to maintain a centralized, wealthy ruling class. In order to keep wealthy, white men in control of the economy, women have been constructed as inferior to men -- physically, mentally and emotionally.…

The perception of gender throughout history has been manipulated and changed into something that is totally different than the gender norm: men should act like men, working and paying the bills, and women should act like women, cleaning, cooking, and caring for children. These days it is more the idea of anything goes. The idea that popular conceptions of femininity and masculinity instead revolve around hierarchical appraisals of the natural roles of males and females gives people the idea that there is only one precedent of behaving and now, with the advances and maturing of society, we are able to break the mold. For example, we have women in superior positions and men as the inferiors. Recently there have been these ideas of gender roles switches and orientation confusion seeping into our media.…

Some say a woman should be happy to have a partner, regardless of how they treat her. Others make gender-based statements on what women can and can’t do. The fact that some people dislike female presidential candidates merely based on the gender is an current example of the adversity women face in “men’s jobs” still face. I’ve heard a multitude ignorant comments spewed from many about how a woman’s privileges and roles can’t be equal to that of a man’s, and is that really any different than Tom’s cruel comments about his opinion of women in the…
