CHANGE MANAGEMENT

PREPARED BY:
ROHAN JAIN Executive Summary

Change management is not a stand-alone process for designing a business solution.
Change management is the processes, tools and techniques for managing the people-side of change. Change management is not a process improvement method. Change management is a method for reducing and managing resistance to change when implementing process, technology or organizational change. Change management is not a stand-alone technique for improving organizational performance. It is important to note what change management is and what change management is not, as defined by the majority of research participants.

Change management is a necessary component for any organizational performance improvement process to succeed, including programs like: Six Sigma, Business Process Reengineering, Total Quality Management, Organizational Development, Restructuring and continuous process improvement.
Change management is about managing change to realize business results.

Recognize that both the engineering and psychological aspects must be considered for successful business change. While many techniques can be employed to design the solution to a business problem or opportunity (i.e., the business change), change management is the process, tools and techniques to manage the people-side of that business change to achieve the most successful business outcome, and to realize that change effectively within the social infrastructure of the workplace.

Change management is a required competency in business today. The shift in the core values of employees to empowerment, ownership, and accountability has created a work force that will embrace change as long as they are part of the process. With the introduction of today's new business values, employee resistance should be expected. In the absence of change management, this resistance can cripple a business

The phrase ‘change management’ has been defined as “the process of continually renewing an organization’s direction, structure, and capabilities to serve the ever-changing needs of external and internal customers” (Todnem, 2005, p. 369 cited Moran and Brightman, 2001, p. 111). Generally, organizational change can be initiated by managers or come into existence through external pressure or implemented as a result of specific changes in policy and procedures. In brief, organizational change is an effort made by management to have members of the organization to think, behave and perform in a different way (Yılmaz and Kılıçoğlu, 2013 cited Kreitner and Kinicki, 2010).…

By gaining insight into the different factors that can contribute to successful change management, we can guide the design of an appropriate change management program. In the following pages, it will be shown that as the environmental characteristics and demands change, the success of an organization will be determined by its ability to adapt and evolve – in other words, successfully change. Successful change requires successful change management. Our sub-questions attempt to determine what is successful change management and how can be achieved despite the obstacles. Specifically, with the help of generic and empirical studies we attempt to explore general characteristics of (successful) change management, change management practices that contribute to success or failure, possible obstacles (e.g. resistance to change), the importance of employee engagement, and ways of achieving the readiness that is necessary for successfully implementing organizational change.…

CHANGE is unavoidable in order to remain competitive in today’s fast-paced market environment. Management guru, Tom Peters puts it that ‘change or die’ has been the bottom line for countless firms (Jick & Peiperl, 2011). Change can be large or small, evolutionary or revolutionary, sought after or resisted (Hayes, 2010) and is a general feature of organisational life, both at an operational and strategic level (Todnem, 2005). Burnes (1992) expressed that ‘change management is not a distinct discipline but rather, the theory and practice of change management draws on a number of social science disciplines and traditions’ (Kitchen & Daly, 2002). It is also defined as ‘the process of continually renewing an organization’s direction, structure, and capabilities to serve the ever-changing needs of external and internal customers’ (Moran & Brightman, 2000). A clear definition of change or change management / organisational is still lacking despite numerous definitions by authors (Struckman &Yammarino, 2003).…

It is managing all of the elements of the change to create a smoother transition and a more comfortable feeling for any given situation. We are creatures of habit and change is not easy for most people. Think about your idea view of life. Do you crave stability or do you thrive on change? Either way, change is constant in our lives. Everyone has the ability to be a change master when you choose how you react to change. You must build your capacity and tolerance for accepting new ideas; learn to be more flexible and release the idea that everything is not cast in stone. This allows you the freedom to make conscious decisions about your own change capacity. By making learning habitual in organizations we can develop a culture of people committed to change and growth who can be a powerful force for business success.
