Introduction
Leadership has been looked at from various aspects ever since it has been studied and all of the derived theories are relevant to different situations and conditions. A common definition of leadership is; ‘A process of social influence by which an individual enlists the aid and support of others in accomplishment of a task or a mission’ (Chemers, 1997). A leadership facet, which greatly interests me, is ‘Change Leadership’.
The scale of competition in the market has increased by leaps and bounds in the past few decades. To survive today, innovation is necessary, not only in business models, products & processes, but also in leadership styles and approach. The biggest challenges that a Leader faces today are either driving change or coping with change. To lead change, multiple styles of leadership are needed which could be applicable to different situations. An effective change leader, would need to practice all 5 styles of change based on situations, scale of change, task at hand and team to accomplish the tasks. Change however is resisted by most, especially if it’s a radical one1. Change leadership is the ability to energize groups who will be implementing change projects that they may or may not buy into.2 Importance of change leadership
The most responsive to change are the ones who survive and grow. The key component of leadership for now and the coming decades is proactive and effective responsiveness to change. It 's important for change leaders to understand the need for change and demonstrate a high tolerance for ambiguity and a positive attitude. Change leadership also involves defining areas for change, preparing & responding effectively to roadblocks, managing change initiatives smoothly by anticipating, create a conducive work environment and involving participation of people at levels in the organization. IF the change is complex, it involves understanding cultural dynamics and developing practical strategies.3

    The ability to change and adapt is extremely important for any organization to reach its full potential. Influencing people to change is more dependent on showing them a truth that influences their feelings, rather than shifting their thinking (Kotter & Cohen, 2002, p. 1). If leaders can change the behavior of members of an organization, the successful large-scale change they are seeking will more likely be realized. According to Kotter and Cohen, in order to achieve successful large-stage change, there are first eight stages that must be followed. These steps are: increasing urgency, building the guiding team, getting the vision right, communicate for buy-in, empower action, create short-term wins, don 't let up, and making change stick (Kotter & Cohen, 2002, p. 6).     I found an article on Forbes.com that is about a leader that led a successful change to his company and it talks about what he felt was key in doing this. The article is about a New Zealand based fertilizer company Ballance Agri-Nutrients and its executive Greg Delaney. Delaney wanted to make changes to the continuous process of his distribution facilities. He went to a seminar and came back with ideas on how to make the process better. He implemented these changes by training small work groups to go and train the other plants. “The key to successfully leading change is committing to changing yourself first. Changing my priorities and committing time and effort to the program was the best way to show everyone how serious I was about the change”(Landel, 2013). I think that by showing you are committed to the change then people will take it to heart and follow along without resistance. As with any plan there will be problems with the initial startup but they can be fixed by working together and good communication. With this story they had issues but worked through them by collaborating and communicating clearly. Collaborating and practicing clarity when it comes to communication is, as always, a key to leading a successful change effort (Landel, 2013). I think that these are great keys to being able to overcome the hurdles of leading a change in any type of business. If you can get your staff on board to follow your lead then you will be successful in implementing the changes that you want to make.…
