Challenges Of Globalization In Canada
Looking at the broader context in which Canadian organizations operate, strategic human resource management (SHRM) can address a number of economic and non-economic factors.
In terms of economic factors, Canadian organizations must overcome the challenges of globalization. These organizations must face increasing international competitors and growing market opportunities abroad. To overcome these two obstacles and remain competitive, organizations in Canada are opening new plants abroad in order to be closer to customers and cut labour costs. A competitive advantage for Canada is its multicultural workforce, which aids in dealing with other countries and cultures, anticipating their needs or concerns, and being proactive in responding

There are two major shifts that have transformed Canadian organizations. First, computerization has changed the way we work, play, and learn. Access to information has enabled organizations to process information in a more timely manner; large volumes of data can be processed at a great speed. Second, automation, or the automatic control of processes or systems by mechanical or electronic devices, has eliminated routine jobs. This has created a need for highly skilled programmers. The push for speed, flexibility, better customer service, increased productivity, and higher standards are just a few of the reasons why Canadian organizations are choosing to automate numerous activities.
Furthermore, a number of demographics trends place challenges on Canadian organizations in terms of human resources management. Examples of these trends include an increasing number of women in the workforce, a shift to service, technical and professional jobs, a higher educational attainment of workers, an aging workforce, and more part-time and contract workers. Greater access to information is a direct result of computerization. Telecommuting is an approach that could be used to decrease employee stress and reduce operating costs. However, not all jobs can be done from home, and more flexible work design might be a better solution for some employees. With greater access to information comes the need to effectively and efficiently share this data. This is where the creation of an organization-wide Intranet will come into play. Private information networks, such as an Intranet, can help increase the speed of decision-making and the sharing of knowledge among employees. It is a fact that many jobs are being taking over by robots. Automation, to be a competitive advantage, needs to integrate new and existing technologies. As the director of human resources, it is most likely that I will have to deal with lost jobs due to automation. This is where I would need to implement an outplacement strategy and help employees find employment

    The first people that lived in Canada were natives, primarily the Inuit (Eskimo). The Norse explorer Leif Eriksson may have reached the shores of Canada in 1000, but the actual history of the white man in the country actually began in 1497. This was when “John Cabot, an Italian in the service of Henry VII of England, reached Newfoundland or Nova Scotia. Canada was taken for France in 1534 by Jacques Cartier. France's colonization efforts were not very successful, but French explorers by the end of the 17th century had gone beyond the Great Lakes and south along the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico.” (Canada) Hudson's Bay Company an English outfit had been established in 1670 and began exploiting the fisheries and fur trades. Over time, a conflict began to develop between the French and English and subsequently in 1713 Newfoundland, Hudson Bay, and Nova Scotia (Acadia) were lost to England. Later that century, during the Seven Years' War (1756–1763), England extended its conquest, and Quebec fell on Sept. 13, 1759. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 gave England control. At that time, Canada’s population was nearly all French, but over the next few decades thousands of British colonists immigrated to Canada from the British Isles and from the American colonies. In 1849, Canada won the right to self-government. By the British North America Act of 1867, the dominion of Canada was created through the confederation of Upper and Lower Canada, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. In 1869, Canada purchased from the Hudson's Bay Company the vast middle-west (Rupert's Land) from which the provinces of Manitoba (1870), Alberta (1905), and Saskatchewan (1905) were later formed.
