Chains By Madam Lockton Analysis
Chains is a good book title for a book like this because during the time set of the book was set in slaves were very popular. It’s a good title because the story is about a slave girl who is sold to an awful woman by the name of Madam Lockton and it seems as if Isabel the slave girl is chained to a never ending prison. A quote that is used to describe that Isabel is chained to slavery is, “‘The toothless sailor approached us again and pointed down to the dock where the crates and casks stamped LOCKTON & FOOTE were being stacked. “that’s where you belong” (27). This represents that the Locktons are quite the traders and have a lot of money and power. Another way the title “‘Chains”’ is significant is that the slavery she is put in chains her

The writer of this book did everything she could to research this book by actually going to live in shelters, sneaking into cargo holds, and learning about horse trailers. She got her idea from to book “Sammy Keys and the Sisters of Mercy.” The tone is both bitter and cynical because the author says how bad Holly has it which is bitter and cynical which makes the tone just that.…

The short story “Hard Times” by Ron Rash, focuses on the effects that depression has on society. The main characters in the story are Jacob and Edna, who are farmers in a rural community in Raleigh, North Carolina. As the story begins, Edna has once again noticed that the eggs from a particular hen is missing. Though she has several other hens, who are laying, she contributes those missing eggs to adding to their poverty. Edna, who was once a very happy person has been soured by the effects of poverty and now stands tight lipped in the door of the henhouse. Jacob makes the comment, "This cove’s so damn dark a man about has to break light with a crowbar” . This comment sets the tone of the story, one of darkness which is a result of poverty.…

Isabel is a young girl. Isabel is a slave. Isabel is a girl who is constantly juggling new problems that are thrown at her. In Laurie Halse Anderson’s book Chains, people walk right over Isabel without even a thought. Isabel still gets back up. Three quotes that I think resemble Isabel’s situations are; “Life is tough my darling, but so are you”, “You have brains in your head, feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose”, and “Hope is the little voice in your head that whispers ‘maybe’ when it seems the whole world is shouting ’no’”.…

    Pan's Labyrinth Analysis

The dark fantasy film Pan’s Labyrinth is a fascinating example of creative story-telling. This film focuses on so many aspects between Ofelia’s imaginary world and the real world, including her stepfather fighting for the Francoist regime. This little girl is uprooted to a military outpost in Fascist-ruled Spain commanded by her new stepfather, the Captain. The reoccurring contrast between Ofelia’s world and her stepfathers world stood out to me, through elements of brutality, innocence, war, imagination, disobedience, and choice. The tests Ofelia must face are chilling and nightmarish, they mirror not just the cruelty of the battles between the army and the rebels, but equally the deep loss and insecurity which Ofelia faces. Del Toro brilliantly intertwines between the two stories, so that we easily follow the action in two worlds simultaneously.…

“Among all the species and degrees of slavery that have excited the attention of mankind . . . there is perhaps none more pitiable than that of the ill-sooted wife. She is bound by ties from which nothing but death can release her, and whatever her suffering and her wrongs is compelled by delicacy and a regard for personal reputation . . . to submit to them in silence, and conceal them from observation.” - Unsigned Colonial-era letter. This quote perfectly describes the situation in which Mrs. Lockton, a character from Laurie Halse Anderson’s novel, Chains, finds herself in. Her story takes place in a revolutionary war torn New York. The novel is centered in a loyalist household where Isabel is a slave to Madam Lockton. They both must resist the chains by which life and…

‘Chains’ is a novel about people breaking free of their chains in many different ways. However are these people actually breaking free because the slaves will always be slaves; wherever they go. Many people in this novel are chained; for example Isabel (the main character) is chained because she is a slave, Lady Seymour is chained because she is paralysed and Old Ben is chained because he is also a slave. But when they have ‘broken free’ are they actually free of their chains, because in reality being free is something that rarely happens.…

Although the slaves pray, and they are traveling in ships with holy names, there is no answer to their prayers. The slaves ask Jesus repetitively, why he is not protecting them from these men. (Lines 6-7) They also have some furious, passionate prayers that they do not say aloud because they are “hot and red,” just like their chained ankles. (Line 10) In the poem, it is evident that the conditions of the ship are so inhumane because along with not being able to move or breathe well, their ankles bear chains. Even though the ship that transports the slaves in is named Angel, (line 8) the fact that they are chained to it brings the feeling of hopelessness to the poem despite the fact that Angels are supposed to bring grace and glory…

Who says you can’t have more than one identity? In “Charles,” by Shirley Jackson, the story reveals how even people staying beneath the same roof may not be fully informed of each other’s true identities. Laurie’s mother, who is the narrator in this story, is unworldly unmindful of her own son’s poor conduct in Kindergarten and is too disposed to presume his illustrations of some different disobeying child. Although her son’s deportment alters when he goes into Kindergarten, she blames this on Charles’s behavior, a boy mentioned a lot by Laurie.…

In this world there are individuals who will never understand how lucky and privileged they are. This can sometimes end with them demolishing things for other individuals without contemplat-ing it. They will often ruin it for them more under privileged than themselves. This is what hap-pens in the short story "Number Three" by Anna Metcalfe where an, poorly payed, Chinese teacher is appointed “International Hostess” for an English teacher named Mr. James from Eng-land. He is hired to educate at a public middle school named "Number Three". Here he requests a higher pay, free cleaning and more holiday, which winds up in the firing of Miss Coral.…
