Chad’s Creative Concepts Assignment

Summary: Founded by Thomas Chad in Sandusky Ohio, Chad’s Creative Concepts is a furniture manufacturer whose roots lie in custom built furniture pieces. As a result of the company’s reputation of high quality pieces, Chad’s Creative Concepts has recently entered into the retail segment of the industry and has begun to produce select standard or mass produced furniture items. While sales are increasing and demand is on the rise, the company is currently experiencing growing pains and must re-examine its operational processes and overall strategy to solidify not only healthy profits but continued happy and satisfied customers.

1. In order run effectively in the short term, Chad needs to manage inventory, scheduling (line time and labor), fulfillment, warehousing, capacity, and overall plant layout on a daily basis. As his business supports both low cost/low customization products and premium cost/high customization products, it is extremely crucial for him to monitor these factors to not only meet and fulfill customer demand, but to also maintain/earn a profit. In the long run, Chad needs to envision what his corporate strategy is. What does Chad’s Creative Concepts Stand for? If it is to support both types of product, he must make adjustments to his manufacturing capacity and layout, whether it involves investment in equipment, labor, and or space. Furthermore, Chad must examine his processes around inventory and warehousing to make them as lean as possible (something that they are not today). Lastly, Chad must analyze his fulfillment obligations and order time with his current manufacturers and he must do so via his sales/marketing team. What is feasible and what is not? How can new or amended processes be implemented to make this process for efficient and lean?

    I believe that Chad must prioritize scheduling hours amongst the standard and customized furniture. Since the company operates only a single manufacturing process, a trade-off between the two types is made. As sales of the standard line steadily increases, Chad may have to schedule more hours for it and decrease for the customized line. To properly figure out scheduling times, Chad can also re-evaluate his inventory system. Even though the standard furniture sales are increasing, the profits are not due to the increased costs. If Chad could erase the public warehouse space, I believe profit would be at a more desired amount. Over the long run, Chad should invest in a secondary machine or process in a different location. His plant does not have room for expansion, but should not be taking more work than it can handle. Hence the longer lead times for both product lines and also for the delivery times. Otherwise, I think Chad should look at his customers and target market in order to solely focus on either the standard or custom line. Another thing to do is maybe change the expected time of delivery. Retail customers may be more focused on delivery time, but if the company rebrands expressing their high-quality products take time, then it might give them a bit more leeway.…

    Chad Thomas needs to make sure daily manufacturing schedules are aligned with the current orders. The fact that the same set of employees and the same set of tools are being used to manufacture both the custom and the standard pieces of furniture is definitely problematic. In order to meet the demands of each product, it is critical that scheduling be created in the most efficient of manners given the current constraints. Allocating all the resources properly is a key along with scheduling and layout. In regards to long term decisions, Mr. Thomas is going to have to decide if he is going to stay with the same facility, equipment, employees and so on. Without making more drastic changes such as seeking to separate the current company into two separate divisions consisting of custom furniture and standard furniture, Chad Thomas may want to ensure the factory layout is as efficient as possible. Mr. Thomas needs to figure out what competitive priorities he wants to most address because currently he has two priorities with potentially two distinctly different answers. Having a highly customized product manufactured requires a more hands on involved approach which focuses less on quantity. The standard furniture is requiring less variety in the product but more volume output at a lower price. With the success of both of these lines of furniture, the company has turned a profit but has reached a point where growth is a significant issue because they are at capacity, lead times are increasing, and the cost of inventory is skyrocketing.…
