CHAPTER 11
THE PROJECT TEAM

Project team: a group of individuals working interdependently to achieve project objective.

Teamwork: the cooperative effort by members of a team to achieve that common goal.

PROJECT TEAM DEVELOPMENT AND EFFECTIVENESS

_ In many projects, people who have never worked together are assigned to the same project team.
_ Personal relationships take time to develop.
_ Teams evolve through various stages of development.

STAGES OF TEAM DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH
_ Forming
_ Storming
_ Norming
_ Performing

1) Forming
_ First stage in team development = questioning.
_ During the forming stage, little actual work is accomplished because of the high level of anxiety that individuals have.
_ Involves the transition from individual to team.
_ Individuals get acquainted.
_ Members generally have positive expectations.
_ Project manager must provide direction and structure. _ Project constraints must be stated.
_ Individuals do a lot of questioning:
– What is our purpose?
– Who are the other team members?
– What are they like?

2) Storming
_ Second stage in team development = direction.
_ Members start to work on their assigned tasks.
_ Members begin to test the limits and flexibility of the project manager.
_ Conflict emerges and tension increase.
_ Motivation and morale are low.
_ Members express their individuality, not team allegiance.
_ Members wonder how much control and authority they have.
_ Project managers should:
– Provide direction
– Not become defensive or take issues personally.
– Provide an understanding and supportive environment. 3) Norming
_ Third stage of team development = acceptance.
_ Relationships become settled.
_ Interpersonal conflicts and dissatisfaction have been reduced.
_ Cohesion begins to develop and there is a sense of team.
_ Project manager minimizes directiveness.
_ Trust begins to develop.
_ There is a greater sharing of info, ideas and feelings.
_ Work performance accelerates and productivity increases.
