PURPOSE

WHY CELEBRATE CESAR CHAVEZ WEEKEND OF SERVICE AND LEARNING?

As described by his family, César E. Chávez was an ordinary man with an extraordinary legacy of great accomplishment and service to humanity. The César Chávez Day of Service and Learning, a holiday in eight states (AZ, CA, CO, MI, NM, TX, UT, WI) and dozens of cities and counties throughout the nation, celebrates Chávez’s life and work and provides an opportunity for all communities to honor the legacy of César E. Chávez by getting involved in their communities through service projects. The late Senator Robert Kennedy called César E. Chávez, "One of the heroic figures of our time." As a testimony to his lifelong contributions to humanity, he received the highest civilian awards from the United States and Mexico, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Aguila Azteca, respectively. This is the legacy that we celebrate and seek to share with our children and all Californians through HOBA’s César Chávez Weekend of Service and Learning.

Not only have they risked their lives trying to make a difference but also some have even lost their lives in the process. One person in particular was Óscar Romero who was a protector of the poor and stood up against the injustices of the government and military. His efforts left a lasting impression, even more than three decades after his tragic death.…

This year’s event took place across the nation on October 28 and the residents of the Ocean Ridge Plantation were amongst the many volunteers across the country giving of their time to help make an impact on their community. ORCA’s intent with this first-time endeavor was to inspire the residents of our community to work together for one day, for one cause. Under the direction of committee members George Briggs, Laura Wheaton, Corinne Eisenstein, Kath Larson, Pris Lovell and Beth Naylor, their ambition was to engage over 100 resident volunteers in a hands-on charitable activity – Ocean Ridge Goes M.A.D.D. – and by day’s end, they surpassed that…

Throughout the worlds history there have been countless effective leaders. Many leaders are effective because they carry with them one trait that stand out to the people. Rosa Parks exuded her bravery when sitting in the front of the bus. Determination played a key role in Nelson Mandela’s leadership in South Africa. There are some leaders that hold more than just one trait, like Cesar Chavez. Everything Cesar Chavez experienced in his life made it possible for him to bear the qualities he had and affect the world during his career. His life experience gave Cesar the leverage to have the support of the migrant workers he was fighting for. From the starts of Cesar’s career to the end, he showed the world how he could relate to the migrant workers, his dedication to giving them their union rights, his selflessness in giving his whole life to the cause, and how influential he turned out to be to the world by actually making it happen.…

Since I was a kid I’ve noticed my home town of Pomona, CA had areas that were roughed up. Whenever I passed through main streets like Holt Avenue I could see sidewalks filled with homeless people & damaged property. Seeing my city in bad shape sparked something in me & I knew I wanted help better the city & give back to it but wasn’t really sure how to contribute up until high school. Sophomore year in high school I joined Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán, MEChA, I was introduced into this club by a friend that was actively involved in it. MEChA’s main focus in the community was to help the Spanish speaking people within the community that were in need of help in school. Another club that I joined that year was Key Club International.…

I remember when we hosted the Make a difference day event for Thurgood Marshall. It was a busy day for all of us. It was also a big event. There were a lot of vacant houses in that area. Our job was to make a list of the vacant houses and to measure it for board-ups. Measuring it took about a week. Lighting observation was a challenge for some of us because we had to wait till dark to find out which light works so that we can write down the address. Some people didn’t like how we were going around the same area multiple times because they didn’t know what we were trying to do. After that some of us had to drive around morning and afternoon to find out the most common routes that everyone takes to go and from school. I couldn’t participate in that because I had school the same time. On the big event day, we secured 10 vacant properties, cleared three blocks of trash, removed a block of graffiti from a vacant property, and created visible safe routes signs. We hit some rough patches on the way but we all worked together to overcome it. It was a very long and exhausting day but we all were happy because we all felt the joy of making a difference in the…

“I am convinced that the truest act of courage, the strongest act of manliness, is to sacrifice ourselves for others in a totally nonviolent struggle for justice. To be a man is to suffer for others. God help us to be men.” Chavez believed that the best way to protest is to do it nonviolently. He was willing to sacrifice himself and went on a 25-day hunger…

My experiences serving others have exposed me to the issues my community faces and have shown me that I can make a difference. My first experience working with underserved populations in my community was serving food at Union Station Homeless Services’ Thanksgiving Dinner in the Park in high school. This made me step out of my comfort zone and interact with a group I was unfamiliar with. Through serving food and interacting with homeless and low-income families, I saw that my small actions could brighten one’s day. This inspired me to start Heal L.A. at UCLA with some of my classmates. We wanted to help the significant homeless population surrounding our campus in any way possible. What started as buying meals and conversing with them has grown…

The month of April is dedicated to Childhood and Child Abuse Prevention. I propose choosing one day, every year, preferably during this month to concentrate our efforts just on the children. The idea is to invite kids that have been removed from their homes and offer them a Chili’s VIP lunch and provide them with an unforgettable experience. By partnering up with Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Puerto Rico we can also provide these children with a wonderful mentoring program. During the event the volunteers can meet and interact with the kids and start creating a bond.…
