Cerebral Lateralization and Function
Cerebral Lateralization and Functionality

PSY/240

Studies have been conducted on cerebral lateralization and functionality of the human brain. Many studies have revealed there are no substantial differences of the left and right hemispheres of the human brain (Pinel, 2009). Some functional differences have shown one hemisphere may be slightly dominating for functional differences (Pinel, 2009). “It is widely believed that the left hemisphere has exclusive control over language and the right hemisphere has exclusive control over emotion and creativity” (Pinel, 2009, p. 411). However, research indicates language functions have substantial activity in the left and right hemispheres of the brain (Pinel, 2009). Cerebral lateralization research has several methods help gain better understanding of the functions of the brain. The sodium amytal test is one method used in cerebral lateralization research. With this test researchers can access language abilities before neurosurgery (Pinel, 2009). In the amytal test, sodium amytal is injected into a patient’s carotid artery of the neck (Pinel, 2009). This injection anesthetizes the hemisphere on the side of the injection and allows the other hemisphere capacities to be assessed for language abilities (Pinel, 2009). The dichotic listening test method of cerebral lateralization allows the use of healthy individuals (Pinel, 2009). During the dichotic listening test, “three pairs of spoken digits are presented through earphones: the digits of each par are presented simultaneously, one to each ear” (Pinel, 2009, p. 402-403). For example, the person taking the test may hear six, nine, four in one ear and at the same time hear the numbers three, five, two in the other ear (Pinel, 2009). Te dichotic listening test show most individuals show left-hemisphere dominance for hearing because the right ear registers slightly more (Pinel, 2009). Functional brain imaging techniques can record brain functions

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the correlational method as a means for examining the relationship between functions of the left and right hemispheres. I will compare the performance of people with intact brains with the performance of so-called split-brain patients. In many ways, the brains of these two groups are very similar. 1A. The brainstem of a normal brain is located in lower back of the brain which connects the cerebellum with the spinal cord. There is no difference between normal brainstem and a split –brain brainstem. Reason is because there is not physical cut done on the brainstem. 1B. The hippocampus is located in the limbic system structure. It is involved making, organizing and storing memories. There is no difference between a split-brain hippocampus and a normal brain hippocampus. The cut done on the corpus callosum will not affect the hippocampus because the cut would not be deep enough. 1C. The cerebral cortex of the normal brain is different from a split-brain cerebral cortex because it has not been severed. In a split-brain cerebral cortex the two…

Research on split-brain had started with animals such as rats, cats and monkeys, which had led to the development of techniques to assess the function of each hemisphere (Francois et al, Myers 1956, Myers and Sperry 1958). This started 30 years of research on human beings, and in turn it effectively gave insights to the functions of the two hemispheres and the ways in which they interact with each other (Francois et al, Gazzaniga 1998).…

The cerebral cortex outer layer of the cerebrum has the two largest hemispheres that covers the upper part of the brain which are divided into smaller portion called lobes. Corticalization is an increase in size of the wrinkling of the cortex and without this we would not be any smarter than any other animal. Cerebral hemispheres are divided into right and left halves of the cortex connected by thick band axon fibers called corpus. Hemispheric specialization, testing only one side of the brain by a process called the Split Brain operation, which is essentially a person with two brains in one body. The corpus callosum is cut, to control severe epilepsy (seizure disorder), but this operation is rare and is often used as a last resort.…

The left side hemisphere of the brain include characteristics such as language skills, mathematical concepts, analytical skills, and logic and reasoning. Those individuals that have this brain hemisphere dominance are good with letters, numbers and words (Sousa, 1995, p. 88). The concepts of learning for the left side brain hemisphere is based on step by step instructions. A person who is dominant on their left side hemisphere learns better by having a plan to follow…

The cerebral cortex is divided into four lobes as well as into left and right hemispheres. Martinez (2010, pp.237) states that, “The cerebral cortex is the anatomical origin of the mind’s higher-order functions—reasoning, intelligence, creativity, and problem-solving—as well as the coordination of sensory input and motor control that helps us relate skillfully to our environments.” By segregating each structure of the cerebral cortex a greater understanding is achieved as to which section is responsible for certain cognitive functions. One important discovery was that the left and right hemisphere of the brain actually process information differently.…

Did you know that the two halves of your brain function for totally different reasons? The left side is often thought of as the brainy side, while the right side is viewed as the artsy side. The logical left side and the creative right side work together in perfect harmony. In order to learn most efficiently, the two hemispheres of the brain have to simultaneously work independently and cooperatively (Toga.) It is commonly known that people are labeled either a ‘left-brained’ or a ‘right-brained’ learner, but does that have any effect on how they learn? This paper will discuss the different types of functions in the right and left hemispheres of the brain and how they can impact learning.…

There are several methods for studying cerebral lateralization; four methods in the forefront are the study of unilateral lesions, sodium amytal, dichotic listening, and functional brain imaging. The traditional method for studying cerebral lateralization is unilateral lesions study, which is the study of the location and effect lesions have on the brain and body functionality. In past, this was primarily done after the subject was deceased or through highly invasive surgery. The sodium amytal test uses an injection of sodium amytal into a carotid artery on the side of the neck that will put the same side hemisphere to sleep for a few minutes allowing doctors to test the other hemisphere for primary language center. The process is then repeated for the opposite side of the hemisphere. This method is invasive, but provides a fairly accurate method to identify the hemisphere that is the primary language center. The dichotic listening test uses earphones to speak a different sequence, such as numbers, in each ear; the sequence with the most digits reported indicates the dominant language hemisphere. For most people, the left hemisphere is the dominant one, meaning the subject would have repeated more sequences heard in the right ear. The dichotic listening test is non-invasive, and it is just as accurate an indicator of primary language center hemisphere as the sodium amytal test method. Functional brain imaging uses positron emission tomography (PET) or functional MRI to measure brain activity while the subject is performing an activity such as reading; typically, functional brain imaging used on language tests reveals more activity in the left hemisphere. Functional brain imaging is the method that shows more detail in brain activity.…

The brain assymetry experiment is to investigate on the distinctiveness of the right and left hemisphere in the brain as each hemisphere has certain specializations. The experiment were carried out by initially asking the 25 participant on whether they were left or right handed and they had to choose the chimeric image which appeared younger to them. Laterality quotients were calculated in order to deduce the effect of the right or left hemisphere on visuo-spatiality as the participants had to make judgements on the faces. Right-handed individuals showed leftward perceptual bias compared to left-handed individuals, indicating that the right hemisphere has an effect on judgement of faces.…

This study was conducted to find a relationship between handedness and hemispheric dominance. The participants in this investigation were all year 11 students in psychology 1A/B at Greenwood College. The data collected by the survey sheet was put into a table then graphed into two separate graphs; one graph for left and the other for right hemisphere dominance. The results that were found rejected the hypothesis of there is a relationship between handedness and hemispheric dominance. It seems that majority of people are just right handed and left hemisphere dominant. The study is very limited due to the ample size and all the uncontrolled variables left in the investigation. This study can be criticized as very unreliable because of its lack to control variables.…

    Split Brain Phenomenon

In the reading we examined and debunked the myth of some people being left- brained and others being right- brained. They explain that the laterality of function means that one or the other hemisphere of the brain can perform or process certain mental tasks better than the other side. This is only true to those who have undergone a “ split brain” operation. The split brain phenomenon refers to a surgical processor that involves surgeons cut the corpus callosum that connects the left and right hemisphere. This surgery is done for patients who suffer severe epilepsy. These split brain patients reveal that the information it processed and coordinated actions by each side of the body could not be unified. They found that the left hemisphere quickly processes literal interpretations, such as speech, grammar, and word generation. While the right hemisphere helps quickly processes nonlinguistic functions, such as intonation, general sense of space, and…
