Centennial School District Board Meeting
I have never been to a school board meeting before, so I am not entirely sure what to expect. I know it is an open meeting, so I am sure there will be several parents of students in the district as well as citizens of area that will be affected by decisions made by the school board. In terms of the agenda, the board will undoubtedly discuss future school functions and the associated budgets, as well as personnel matters. This is a policy-making meeting so I do not expect there to be much input from the audience other than possible questions or concerns. Hopefully the board will address the agenda in an efficient and time effective manor and all disputes will be put to rest.
On October 8 2013 I was able to watch the Centennial School District Board meeting live via their website, which worked very much to my advantage because transportation was a major issue. The meeting took place at the town hall in Warminster, PA. The mission of the school board is to provide an environment for all of its students where they can maximize their potential in education and extracurricular activities with as little difficulty as possible. The school board specifically establishes and evaluates policies for operation of the schools, selects a Superintendent, approves a budget, levies taxes as a means of raising revenue, hires administration, establishes curriculum content, and adopts textbooks upon administrative recommendation. The members of the board include: President Dr. Andrew Pollock, Superintendent Dr. Joyce Mundy, Vice President Betty Huf, Asst. Secretary Kati Driban, and school directors Steven Adams, Michael Hartline, Charles Kleinschmidt, Jane Lynch, Mark Miller, and David Shafter.
The Centennial School district is compromised of schools from the borough of Ivyland and Upper Southampton Township and Warminster Township all located within Bucks County. The demographics for Bucks County are as follows (via http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/42/42017.html): Total

The Meeting open with the city accountant presenting a general financials report. She spent most of her time reporting on the expenditures the city is required to pay out to Memorial Health system, which from the way they were speaking I understood there was some sort of legal settlement they have to pay out on. Also discussed the cost of some handicapped access renovations to the hospital and the building codes at certain access points according to the current plans, and the costs to the city to execute these plans. There was also a request asking for a $500,000 increase to fix some required drainage repairs, to install some slip lines to cover failing copper water lines on Powers Avenue. And the last specific Item they discussed during this time was the cost and procedure of doing the mail in ballots for the April 2015 elections.…

Bolman & Deal (2013) state, “organizations are coalitions of different individuals and interest groups”. The school district is governed by members of the school board. These citizens elected from their community make decisions about educational programs based on community needs, values, and expectations. The board is responsible for putting the interest of students above all other measures. The responsibility of hiring a superintendent is bestowed upon the board of trustees. Once the board decides on a superintendent they can then start the hiring process of principals for a school. Administrators are responsible for running the day to day operations in the school. They will hire department heads that will be in charge of teachers for each subject.
