Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis
Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, some bacteria, and some protistans use the energy from sunlight to produce sugar, which cellular respiration converts into ATP, the "fuel" used by all living things. The conversion of unusable sunlight energy into usable chemical energy, is associated with the actions of the green pigment chlorophyll. Most of the time, the photosynthetic process uses water and releases the oxygen. Cellular respiration allows organisms to use (release) in the chemical bonds of glucose(C6H12O6). The energy in glucose is used to produce ATP. Cells use ATP to supply their energy needs. Cellular respiration is therefore a process in which the energy in glucose is transferred to ATP. In respiration, glucose is transferred to ATP. Oxidized and thus releases energy. Oxygen is reduced to form water. In Photosynthesis, plants use the sun's energy as light to transform carbon dioxide and water into glucose. In cellular respiration, glucose is ultimately broken down to yield carbon dioxide and water, and the energy from this process is stored as ATP molecules. The equation for photosynthesis is: 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy --> 6O2 + C6H12O6 and cellular respiration is:

6O2 + C6H12O6 --> 6H2O + 6CO2 + energy The reactants in the photosynthesis process stay on the left, they are 6 molecules of water (H2O) and 6 molecules of carbon dioxide. The products are 6 molecules of Oxygen and glucose. In the cellular respiration the reactants are 6 molecules of Oxygen and glucose, and the products are 6 molecules of water + 6 molecules of carbon dioxide. As we can see the cellular respiration is the opposite equation of the photosynthesis. All life depends on these reactions because we need oxygen, and this oxygen comes from the plants that releases it from photosynthesis. And we all need energy to function. We get this energy from the foods we eat. The most

The other products of respiration, carbon dioxide and water, can be reused by the cells doing photosynthesis. The ATP is transmitted to the other cells in the organism to provide them with an energy source. This is specifically important, for plants, because they can 't get new energy when the sun isn 't available, so ATP also offers a way for them to store up energy supplies.…

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants create food for themselves which occurs in the cytoplast organ of the cell. They absorb carbon dioxide, water, and solar energy to produce glucose and oxygen (Doc C). Cellular respiration on the other hand, is the process occurring in the mitochondria by which organisms create energy to power cellular processes. This process takes in glucose and oxygen to create carbon dioxide, water, and energy in the form of ATP (Doc C). These processes follow the law of conservation of matter and energy as the amount of products is always equal to the amount of reactants in a chemical equation. So the amount of glucose and oxygen created during photosynthesis is equal to the amount of carbon dioxide and water used and the amount of carbon dioxide and water produced during cellular respiration is equal to the amount of glucose and oxygen used. Many people notice that the products of cellular respiration are the reactants of photosynthesis and the products of photosynthesis are the reactants of cellular respiration. This is because the two processes work together to provide organisms with food and…

Photosynthesis and cellular respiration play significant roles in existence of all living organisms on the planet. Supplying energy to the cells they carry out is the main process called life. Photosynthesis is the process by which several living organisms such as plants and bacteria utilize sunlight and several raw materials such as carbon dioxide and water to produce sugars and release oxygen into the atmosphere. It does not only supplies oxygen which required for human life but it is also the primary source of food energy for all forms of life, directly or indirectly. Cellular respiration is the process of converting food molecules such as glucose into energy in the form of ATP. In this process, oxygen is utilized and carbon dioxide is produced. Carbon dioxide, required for photosynthesis by plants is replenished by carbon dioxide released in respiration. Similar to oxygen required for respiration is replenished by oxygen released in photosynthesis. Thus, photosynthesis and cellular respiration compliments each other to help maintaining the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in nature. Three differences that exist between these two chemical processes is that photosynthesis captures sunlight energy to make food for the plants and other organisms while cellular respiration extracts energy from food molecules. Another difference between photosynthesis and respiration is where it occurs, one being in plants and some bacteria and the other being in most every other living thing. The last difference is cellular respiration processes are divided into processes that require oxygen and those that do not require oxygen while the processes of photosynthesis are divided into those that require light energy and those that do not require light energy. The things to remember are that photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide, water and light to make glucose and oxygen, while respiration uses glucose and oxygen to make carbon dioxide, water and…

Cellular respiration a process in which sugar and oxygen are used to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), water, and carbon dioxide. The chemical equation for this reaction is C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy (ATP). Cellular respiration occurs in 4 steps: Glycolysis, the preparatory reaction, the Krebs Cycle, and the oxidative phosphorylation. Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm of the cell, in this process glucose is broken into two 3 Carbon molecules called pyruvates. The preparatory reaction occurs in the matrix of the mitochondria and in this reaction pyruvate get oxidized and attached to a coenzyme. The product is called acetyl CoA which is used to carry out the Krebs Cycle. The Krebs Cycle occurs in the matrix of the mitochondria,…

The reactants are oxygen and glucose. I know that oxygen is needed for cellular respiration because of lab 9.1. In that lab, we found out that 20ml of oxygen for 100ml of blood was going to the cells from the lungs. We also discovered that of the 100ml of blood, 15 was going from the cells to the lungs. This shows us that oxygen is necessary for cellular respiration because as the blood went through the body, the oxygen level decreased because it was being used up by the body. Also in lab 9.2, we learned how food molecules, in this case glucose, are used by the body. In this part of the lab, researchers gave dogs a glucose drink(sugar water) and measured the amount of glucose in three different places in the body. The places with glucose in most to least order is as follows. Veins:small intestine to liver, Veins: From liver to body, and Artery: From body to organs for digestion. This shows us that glucose or food molecules are necessary for cellular respiration because the food was being placed in different spots. It was being used by those spots, being digested, or stored. The products are carbon dioxide, water, kinetic, and thermal energy. Cellular respiration produces carbon dioxide. One way I know this is because of lab 9.2. In this lab we had two test tubes. One with elodea plant and one without. We filled both up with BTB solution, but we did not blow in it causing it to be blue because it had a low carbon dioxide concentration. We left it in the dark overnight. The next day the tube without the plant was still a blue color because no carbon dioxide was added. The tube with the plant turned a green/yellow color because carbon dioxide was produced through cellular respiration. This shows us that carbon dioxide is produced and cellular respiration does happen because the plant was constantly providing energy for itself, just not through photosynthesis. The plant was taking in oxygen and using it to produce carbon…

Put simply, photosynthesis is the process of converting light energy into chemical energy and storing it in the bonds of sugar. Photosynthesis comes from the Greek language and literally means “Light Composition” or “Putting Together Light.” Photosynthesis generally takes place in plants, however it also takes place in algae and many species of bacteria. In photosynthesis, light energy is converted to chemical energy and the chemical energy is then stored in the form of glucose, or sugar. Carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight are used to produce glucose, oxygen, and water which they can then produce food from, releasing oxygen as a waste product. There are two main steps in photosynthesis - The Light Dependent Reaction and the Light Independent Reaction, or the Calvin Cycle. In the Light Dependent Reaction, plants capture and store energy from sunlight, which is converted into chemical energy in the form of ATP and NADPH. In the Calvin Cycle, ATP and NADPH are used to convert carbon dioxide and water into organic compounds that can be used for food for the plant or an animal that feeds off of the plant. Photosynthetic organisms are called photoautotrophs, which means nourishment in Greek, because they can create their own food and energy. They also use energy from light. However, not all organisms that use light as a source of energy carry out photosynthesis. Chloroplasts are necessary for photosynthesis to take place, and they specifically use chlorophyll, the green pigment involved in photosynthesis. Because of this, photosynthesis most often takes place in the leaves of plants, since that is where the chloroplasts can be found. Since photosynthesis requires carbon dioxide, water, and sunlight, all of these substances must be obtained or transported to the leaves. Photosynthesis is necessary for all aerobic life on Earth because it maintains normal levels of oxygen throughout the atmosphere and is also the source of energy for nearly all life on Earth, either…

respiration is also very different. Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplast of plants in the thylakoids and aer. respiration occurs in the mitochondrion of cells. Both processes have different purposes starting off with saying that photosythesis's goal is to make carbohydrates, lipids, or proteins and the goal of respiration is to make ATP, water and have oxygen as the final hydrogen acceptor. There is no FADH+ in photosynthesis, a lower electron acceptor, and no photophosphorylation in aer. res. The cycles of the 2 are similar all in that there are different molecules put in and different enzymes used. In the Kreb cycle, a pyruvic acid goes from the cytosol after being formed from a split glucose molecule (glycolysis) into the matrix of the mitochondrion. There it is meet with acetyl CoA and CO2 and NADH2 is given off. The NADH2 goes straight to the E.T.C. to be used and this is not what happens in photosynthesis. After making 2 ATP, 6CO2, 8 NADH2 and 2 FADH2, the process finishes in the E.T.C. For every NADH2 dropping off its electrons there is energy to make 3 ATP. Only 2 are made from every FADH2 though. In summary, we breath so oxygen is the final electron acceptor and we exhale to alleviate wastes. In photosynthesis, there is a reaction center where there is a chlorophyll a and in photosystem I it is referred to as P700 and in photosystem II it is called P680. In photo. water is oxidized. The enzyme that differs…

Energy is the capacity to do work. According to the first law of Thermodynamics, energy can never be created nor destroyed, but can only be transformed. Thus, the sun burns up its mass to release light and mass to release light and heat energy that reach the earth. It is this light energy that Chlorophyll plants, protists (algae) and monerans (bacteria and cyanobacteria) capture and convert to chemical energy through photosynthesis (photo-light; synthesis-building up) , the key process by which energy that ultimately comes from sunlight is supplied to nearly all living systems. Such photosynthetic organisms, themselves, use part of this chemical energy to grow and reproduce, but they are also eaten by animals and decomposed by fungi and the dominant achlorophyllous bacteria, thus supplying these organisms’ energy needs.…
