cell phones
Cell phones and their everyday use.
The invention of cell phones has enabled us to improve our lives in many ways which can be great for some but for others has caused irresponsibly behavior. Most of the time they allow us to multitask but for some it is just a distraction.
Cell phones have had a major impact on our lives both positive and negative. They affect how we handle our everyday tasks. They can be entertaining most of the time with all the cool features, or help us regarding safety in our times of need. Cell phones have even contributed to our lives socially, allowing us to stay connected. They can also become quiet annoying and get in the way with many things we value, like family. Let’s see if the advantages of having access to cell phone outweigh the disadvantages.
Most of the time having a cell phone can bring a sense of safety. Have you ever been stranded on the side of the road, or lost in the middle of the night? That’s were cell phones come in handy, just call someone for help and it’s on the way. Turning on your location service and using the maps also works to get you were you’re going when lost. Another advantage may be when you need to reach your children to make sure they made it home okay or being able to check on someone who is traveling. However there are some safety disadvantages with cell phones. They keep us out of the loop to the extent that we don’t pay attention to our surroundings. Which in turn can cause us to become a victim for theft, and we all know that the replacement fee comes out of our pockets. When this happens we can become stressed and aggravated to say the least. Then there are those around us who let our phones run our lives and distract them while were driving, causing accidents sometimes even death. Even walking down the street becomes a challenge with a cell phone in hand. We need to pain attention and not get so caught up in what we’re doing with our phones because it can harm us as well as put others at risk. If you disagree with me then take a look at statistics and all the campaigns out there regarding texting while driving, they prove the dangers of cell phone use among other things.
Cell phones have certainly made our lives much more convenient. They have made keeping in touch easy. No matter who it may be that you need to keep in touch with family, friends, or even work. Having a cell phone allows you to remain connected at all times. The upside to being connected at all times is that you know where everyone is and what’s going on at all times. Such as allowing families to keep in closer touch with one another when there is long distance between them. Children can contact you if they have missed their bus home from lacrosse practice and your spouse can call while he is stuck in traffic to let you know that he is running late. Even teenagers are able to call to ask permission to go somewhere, and with location features on some cell phones, you are now able to check to make sure they are where they say they are. The downside to being connected at all times is that we become so dependent on it that if we forget our phones somewhere or worse maybe lose them, we become so distraught that we feel lost without them and it throws us into a state of panic. Another downside to our cell phones is they interrupt time with family, from friends calling to talk about nonsense or even harassing calls from telemarketers who don’t want to take no for an answer. Depending on how you look at cell phones they can either be convenient or become a burden.
Have you ever found yourself waking up in the middle of the night to answer a call or check a missed text? Doing so causes you to lose sleep and may even cause other health problems. Or trying to do homework and getting distracted by your cell phones causing you to lose your train of thought. Cell phones allow us to multitask, which can be good and bad. There is a time and place for it all and some people just don’t know when and where it’s ok. They feel it’s their phone so they should be free to do as they wish when and where they want.
Cell phones can also be entertaining; if you have access to the internet on your cell phone then you know how to stay up to date on what’s happening in the world around you. Whether you’re interested in celebrities or the weather the internet has it. Cell phones also have fun games, music and numerous social media sites. Years ago, we had to go out and buy a newspaper or watch the news to find out what was going on in the world, and as for games we had to go to a store and purchase board games such as Monopoly or Uno. Now it’s all at the touch of your fingertips, just search and download. Another great and entertaining feature on a cell phone is the camera. While we may have needed to purchase a camera and film before, we now have it on our cell phones ready for action. So now we can take pictures in the moment and not miss out on anything. Whether were using the camera to create memories, capture special moments or even take selfies. Everyone seems to be doing it; even our president was caught taking selfies with people such as the Danish prime minister and even the prime minister of Malaysia.
Whether you feel cell phones have changed your life in a good way or bad way. They have certainly helped many of us or hindered us in different ways. Some have benefitted socially, or simply enjoy the cell phone for pure entertainment. Others may find them annoying or a huge safety concern but they still need them and still use them. Either way we have all become addicted to the invention of the cell phone. Cell phones are not all bad; we just need to remember to take time to disconnect from the cell phone and its many features and enjoy the people and the world around us.

In “Extra large, Please,” Alice M. Davies focuses on the increase of obesity with children, which schools are provoking. There are many various social problems in kids of America today ranging from poverty to drug abuse. One alarming factor that is rapidly exploding is childhood obesity. Alice Davies’ article, “‘Extra Large,’ Please,” which describe the alarming social problem of childhood obesity connected to the fast food industry in America today. Davies stated: “the number of American kids who are dangerously overweight has tripled. More than 16 percent of our children qualify as ‘obese’” (Davies). Although childhood obesity is a growing problem stemming from a terrible diet and lack of exercise, we can take action now to avoid further detriment towards their future health. The first cause of childhood obesity is the lack of inactivity. Many schools are not required to have any physical education. Unfortunately, Davies’ states: “Many of those schools are so short of money they’ve scrapped physical-fitness classes” and “too few communities have athletic programs in place.” It is terrible that schools have a hand in this growing epidemic. Also, Spurlock’s Supersize Me documentary shows that “schools are cutting out recess to study for testing and only one state requires physical-fitness classes.” It is terrible that most of these children taking exams are obese. In addition, they live in a dangerous neighborhood where they can’t go out and play because drug activity and violent crime may make playing outside dangerous. Communities should take part in making the neighborhood a safe haven for kids to play outside. The second cause of childhood obesity is poor eating habits. Children will rather eat candy instead of focusing on the products that are good for the body. Parents play a major role when it comes to allowing or giving their child food that will damage the body more less providing nutrients. Children need to leave the junk food behind…
