Reading Anton Chekhov's stories, one feels oneself in a melancholy day of late autumn, when the air is transparent and the outline of naked trees, narrow houses, grayish people, is sharp. Everything is strange, lonely, motionless, helpless. The horizon, blue and empty, melts into the pale sky and its breath is terribly cold upon the earth which is covered with frozen mud. The author's mind, like the autumn sun, shows up in hard outline the monotonous roads, the crooked streets, the little squalid houses in which tiny, miserable people are stifled by boredom and laziness and fill the houses with unintelligible, drowsy bustles. Here anxiously, like a gray mouse, scurries "The Darling," the dear, meek woman who

Skrzynecki also feels isolation and insecurity when he states “Our lady watched with outstretched arms, her face overshadowed by clouds.” He uses negative connotations which are symbolic of an unhappy place. This is also symbolic of his future. Skrzynecki could never belong since he did not create the intricate mix of social relationships and individual identity.…

Detailed imagery emphasizes the notability of identity while suffering in One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. The labor camp is in desolate Siberia, where it is frigid and barren. There are few opportunities to escape the cold, as the prisoners are furnished with only tattered rags for clothes. Consequently, the cold is an acute struggly for almost every prisoner. When warmth is available, “A man who’s warm can’t understand a man who’s freezing?” (Solzhenitsyn 111). Although their bodies are physically cold, on a deeper level, someone privileged could never truly relate with someone in a worse situation. Literally, Tsezar could not fathom how cold Shukhov feels; metaphorically, those with freedom would not be able to understand the…

    S. A Novel about the Balkans, by Slavenka Drakulic, is a story about a Bosnian woman, named S., who was tortured by the hands of brutal soldiers during the Bosnia war. The novel mainly centers on a series of S.’s flashbacks, as she recounts the horrific ill-treatment she endured throughout this time period. Through telling S’s story, the author creates a vivid image of how deep and dark human nature is during wartime. The story is a revelation of the terrifying aspects of war, which include torture, rape and mass murdering/genocide by the occupying forces. Slavenka Drakulic’s story depicts how S. rose above the war crimes and on top of injustice to show the true meaning of human life. During war, almost all men and women involved suffer immensely, however, as portrayed in the novel S., women suffer more through mistreatment, sexual abuse, mishandling and irreversible traumas acted upon by the inhumane soldiers. The events that occurred in Bosnia during the 1990’s will go down in history as one of the most inhuman and cruel time periods ever. Through the character S.,…

The issues of acceptance and alienation are crucially present in Peter Skrzynecki's 'Feliks Skryzynecki'. Although the poem is a tribute to Peter Skrzynecki's father, a range of concepts are also revealed. Through the use of powerful and vivid imagery, the poet successfully conveys Feliks as a man who is comfortable, content and secure in his own identity. In this poem, concepts of belonging and not belonging occur within place, family, community and culture.…

Having laid the foundations and the influences for the understanding of St. Karol Wojtyła’s personalism, this section will elucidate that of his own conception of person. As what have been said, Wojtyła is very fond with regard to the issues on the human person because of his personal experience of injustices and unhuman cruelties. The purpose of the poem under theme “The Hidden Language of the Soul” is to evoke an emotional response in the reader and to cause him to ponder about dance as a language but to also inform them on the difficulties of speaking that language. The poem shows the definitions of verbal language in dance and how emotional an experience dance can be. It aspires to touch dance teachers, as well as members of the Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism, as they can influence the acceptance of dance as a non-verbal language. The context chosen to reach the audience to perform the piece at a poetry exposition so that its message is heard by a great number of people at once. In reviewing Charles Simic’s latest collection for the New York Times, Katha Pollitt briefly (and importantly) mentions his work as a translator of Serbo-Croatian poets, including Vasko Popa and Ivan Lalic. I adore Popa’s work, but am unfamiliar with Lalic’s, beyond the poems Simic included in his anthology of Serbian poets, The Horse Has Six Legs. Another star from this anthology, whose name I don’t often see mentioned (certainly not as frequently as Popa’s) is Aleksandar Ristovic.…
