I often accompanied many of my relatives to their dental appointments as a translator and have always been curious about the work done in a dental office that cannot be seen during appointment visits. I was very lucky to be given an opportunity in high school to shadow a dentist for one day and personally observe various dental procedures that were performed. I have learned a lot just by observing the steps and seeing what kinds of instruments were involved. In applying for UB Dental Clinical Observation Program, I am looking for an opportunity to expand my knowledge and experience in a field that I strongly feel passionate about. The Clinical Observation Program will help me accurately understand the dynamics and responsibilities that this…

The Nashville Veterans Affairs (VA) dental clinic was a beneficial learning experience because it was a unique population. The VA is committed to improving the health of Veterans through a comprehensive and high quality system, which focuses on each patient's special needs. This mission was important because each patient I saw was completely different with special needs, but they were all similar in a few behavioral ways. My rotation at the VA clinic was helpful because each patient I saw had different medical conditions. It was interesting to learn that all of the VA records were accessible to all of a patient’s providers in the hospital. This seemed important and helpful in my opinion because everything about that patient’s medical treatments…

There are many routes by which infection can enter the body. For example infection can enter the body via blood, saliva, sexual, insect bites. If I wasn’t to wash my hands after using the toilet and went straight into preparing food this good causing infection to the people eating the food that I prepared, I could also have infected cuts and grazes on my hands which again if I didn’t was them I could pass on my infection. Elderly people find it a lot more difficult to fight infections therefore it is vitally important that we do everything we can to prevent infections. It is extremely important to wash your hand correctly when you work in a care setting environment. The most effective way of wash your hands are to firstly wet the hands with water. Apply enough soap and hand wash to cover all hand surfaces. Rub hands palm and palm. Right palm over the other hand with interlaced fingers and vice versa. Palm to palm with fingers interlaced. Backs of fingers to opposing palms with fingers interlocked. Rotational rubbing of left thumb clasped in right palm and vice versa. Rotational rubbing, backwards and forwards with clasped fingers of right hand in left palm and vice versa. Rinse hands with water. Dry hand thoroughly with a towel. Again it is also very important that we wear personal protective equipment when needed. For example if someone is covered in feces I must put on an apron and gloves to make sure that I keep any infection under control.…

Healthcare associated infections measures the transmission of diseases and/or bacteria between healthcare professionals and their patients. The measurement of transmissible infection diseases does not eliminate the chances in a hospital setting; rather, the day to day interaction with all healthcare workers. Hand hygiene contributes significantly to keeping patients safe regardless if the patients are humans and animals. Washing hands is a simple, inexpensive, and an effective action to prevent the spread of microbes that cause healthcare associated infection. The most common transmissible disease in any hospital, dental, or veterinary cleaning is Staphylococcus aureus. The task of proper hygiene in-between patients’ care enhances patient safety…

    * Oral Transmission - Sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis B are thought not to be normally transmitted though mouth to mouth contact, although it is possible to transmit some STDs between the genitals and the mouth, during oral sex. In the case of HIV this possibility has been established. It is also responsible for the increased incidence of herpes simplex virus 1 (which is usually responsible for oral infections) in genitals infections and the increased incidence of the type 2 virus (more common genitally) in oral infections * Oral Transmission - diseases that are transmitted primarily by oral means may be caught through direct oral contact such as kissing, or by indirect contact such as such as sharing a drinking glass or a cigarette. Diseases that are known to be transmissible by kissing or by other direct or indirect oral contact include all the diseases listed above as transmissible by droplet contact and also (at least): - Cytomegalovirus infections.…

In the workplace employees need to put these safe ways of working into practice; for example by effective hand washing, not coming into work when you’re not feeling well as you will be putting others at risk, by not wearing jewellery when cooking or supporting service users in other activities as jewellery carries many pathogens, by always wearing protective clothing; as a care assistant wearing an apron and gloves for procedures will reduce the spread of infection by preventing infection passing on from me to others and from getting it on my clothes and spreading it onto another person I come into contact with. It is also important that all equipment is cleaned correctly to avoid cross infection this is because infection can also spread from one person to another through instruments, linen and equipment.…
