1: Executive Summary
The global smartphone market has witnessed extraordinary growth in recent years, with shipments rising by 40 percent in 2013 to exceed the 1 billion unit threshold and $266 billion in value. CCS Insight forecasts smartphone shipments of 1.89 billion units by 2018.
However, explosive growth has been accompanied by significant disruption. Large Web players are seeking to embrace the advantages that mobile delivers in the areas of engagement, context, connectivity and price compared with the PC-based gateways that have defined their businesses until now.

The iPhone is the most sought-after smartphone on the market today. Since 2007, the iPhone is currently available only through AT&T. For years, there have been rumors that other wireless providers, such as Sprint, T-Mobile or Verizon Wireless would get the iPhone. In October, the Wall Street Journal reported that Apple is in the process of producing an iPhone that will be available to Verizon Wireless customers beginning in 2011. With large numbers of customers wanting an iPhone but choosing not to sign with AT&T, competition from other smartphones manufacturers, such as the BlackBerry and Droid, and Apple’s search for new areas of growth, an end to AT&T’s absolute advantage in iPhone sales appears to be on the horizon.…

Raising smartphone estimates. We raise our global smartphone market forecast by 9%/15% to 688mn/885mn units (46%/29% growth) in 2012/2013, driven strength in both high end and low end segments. We believe the addressable market for smartphones is 2.35bn longer term, resulting in effective penetration of only 33% currently. With significant improvements in availability of lower end smartphones and LTE being an incremental driver, we expect effective smartphone penetration to rise to 100% and lead to smartphone volumes of 1.18bn units by 2015, 26% CAGR. On ASPs we believe the mix shift down market can be offset by Apple’s unprecedented ability to grow the high end, and hence see limited pressure near term. Credit Suisse smartphone vendor scorecard – Apple, Samsung, Nokia in the top three. We continue to rely on our proprietary smartphone vendor scorecard which is based on nine metrics (software, services, cloud, product, brand, distribution, compute convergence, IPR and chipset efficiency) which we believe drive success in smartphones. We conclude that secular share gainers will be Apple, Samsung and Huawei and see scope for Nokia’s share to recover. There are increasing signs of vulnerability for Motorola Mobility, HTC and Sony and a rapid decline for RIM. It is about more than just the phone now…think compute. Increasingly, we believe that success in smartphones will be impacted by success in…

In the USA today article published on September 25, 2012, the effect of the iPhone 5 on the economy is discussed. As everyone already knows, we are still in a great economic recession. It is estimated, however, that the selling of the iPhone to consumers will add approximately 3 billion dollars to the US economy by the end of this year. Within this article, the concept of economic growth is prevalent. With the expected 3 billion dollars expected to be added to the US economy, this would add approximately 1/3 of a percentage point to our economy’s economic growth rate by the end of this year. Compared to the iPhone sales last year for the iPhone 4s, they added approximately .1-.2 of a percentage point to the country’s economic growth, which is less than the expected earnings of the iphone 5. The US economic growth rate for this year with the aid of the iPhone 5 is predicted to be somewhere between 2 to 2.5 percent. This is pretty weak, but factors such as the quality of the product, the quantity supplied, the quantity demanded, and popularity of the good nonetheless is contributing to the country’s overall economic growth. Going back to the statement of this percentage growth is still pretty week, this is explained when Zandi explains that increased spending on iPhones would mean decreased spending on other things. This can be related to the concept of opportunity cost. For example, if Mary were to spend money on a $200 16GB iPhone 5, then she would have to give up buying those 2 pairs of shoes that she’s been eyeing down at the mall. Another economic concept demonstrated is the effect of quantity demanded of a good on one of its goods complements. With the sales of iPhones going up, then there would be an increased demand for iPhone cases, chargers, earphones, etc because they are complements to the iPhone itself. It is clear that the iPhone 5 is an incredibly popular product already and this article explains the effect of it on the economy…

The most recent popular cell phone to be introduced is the iPhone. Aside from the multiple grammatical errors in the article, I found it interesting that there was a situation where there is an extremely high demand for a product but no supply. Due to the lack of sellers in the market, it has created an illegal black market monopoly for the iPhone. The legal way to supply cell phones in China involves a monopoly of two state-owned companies that act as cellular operators who demand a profit-share on the iPhone. This is one of the few times where there may be an excessively large demand for a product but it isn’t profitable for the company to supply it to the market.…
