The Story of an Hour and A Rose for Emily Both stories, “The Story of an Hour,” and “A Rose for Emily,” play very important roles in American literature. “The Story of an Hour” is a short story written by Kate Chopin in 1894. The story describes how Mrs. Louise Mallard felt after she heard the news of Mr. Mallard’s death. Mrs. Mallard realized that she lived unhappy with her husband, and that she would get more freedom when she became a widow. Finally she died because of shock when Mr. Mallard came back. “A Rose for Emily” is a short story by William Faulkner first published in 1930. The whole story is about a woman, Emily, who became reliant on others because of her father’s control, and then fell in love with a day labourer who came from the North. She tried to married him, but the man did not become a couple with her. Emily poisoned her lover and slept beside him for several years. “A Rose for Emily” and “the Story of An Hour” shares differences and similarities regarding the emotional problems which both characters have, Emily and Mrs. Mallard have hopes which unfilled, and different desires of life which two personages have.
Both characters have emotional issues. In the 19th century women always have mentally illnesses. In A Rose for Emily, readers can find out that Emily really becomes crazy at the end of the story. Although William Faulkner did not tell readers that Emily Grierson who killed her lover, Homer Barron, most readers might believe that she poisoned Homer Barron. Also, in the end of story, a group of people discovered that Homer’s body was in a secret room of Emily’s house, and beside the body they found a strand of “iron-grey hair” which as same as Emily’s hair.     In his article entitled “A Rose for Emily,” Donald Akers states that this short story will “remain a remarkable, provocative work regardless of the critical approach.” Akers described Emily as a weird character because of her refusal to pay taxes in the story and telling the tax collectors to discuss her taxes with a dead man. The man had been dead for ten years, and she was pretending he was alive. The author states that Emily’s being weird may appear throughout her whole family, and that being strange may have been passed on to her. Akers statement that Emily’s great-aunt, Old lady Wyatt, was crazy proves just that. Akers blamed Emily’s weirdness on her father. He stated that because her father would not let her date, she rebelled after he was dead by choosing a man out of her social class. She then would not let Homer leave, and did so by killing him. Akers said that, “the discovery of a strand of her hair on the pillow next to the rotting corpse suggest that she slept with the cadaver or, even worse, had sex with it.” The critic’s statement is what helps the reader comprehend that Emily is psychologically off. Akers later questions if Emily may be a tragic heroine in the story.     In the short story “A rose for Emily” by William Faulkner, it starts off with the unknown narrator explaining Miss Emily’s funeral and why the townspeople actually attended. From this the reader learns what type of character Miss Emily is. She does not like change and cannot handle denial. Her family’s name and the way she was bought up by her father is the explanation for this. Throughout the story the reader realizes how respected her family was and what lengths Miss Emily is willing to go to keep the man she loves by her side. The allegory in a rose for Emily would be the townspeople and Miss Emily. Miss Emily is stuck in the past and the town treats her as if nothing has changed. Miss Emily being so isolated in her home shows her unwillingness to accept that the South is changing even when the influences of the North are taking over. The new generation with their new ideas tried to change the ways of Miss Emily but failed. When they demanded taxes, she refused to pay, and she won. This is symbolic of Miss Emily’s efforts to keep the South’s culture alive. The conflict in this short story is internal. Miss Emily cannot understand the idea of death. When Miss Emily’s father dies she refuses to believe it. She also suffers a lot when denied because as soon as she thought her boyfriend, Homer Barron, would leave her she bought poison, the arsenic, and he disappeared. She killed him to make sure that he would never leave. The arsenic was a symbol of getting rid of something. It is used to “kill anything up to an elephant” (4) and for Miss Emily is was used to end Homer Barron’s life. Homer Barron is a FOIL character because he is constantly around Miss Emily giving her the impression that he wants to be with her and because of that Miss Emily falls in love with him.     During the course of this story Emily struggles to accept Mr. Grierson, Colonel Sartoris, and Homer Barron have died. We see this in two different ways. First, her failure to realize years later (days later in her father’s case) that these men have passed away. Secondly, Emily keeps Homer as well as Mr. Grierson bodies even after they died. Exhibiting traits of someone who suffers from necrophilia. Emily also struggles to adapt to the world that is industrializing, and modernizing around her. Instances of this are also through the story. Whether she is unwilling to pay taxes, receive the free new mail delivery, or even her house being the last one standing in the neighborhood. The teachings and values of Confucianism that were so strong that they have lasted throughout the centuries of Chinese history and is still well-known today. These values included guidelines on respect.     Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" and William Faulkner's "A Rosefor Emily" both characterize the nature of marriage and womanhood by delving into the psyches of their female protagonists. Also, although Chopin makes no clear reference to geographic locale in "The Story of an Hour," both authors usually set their stories in the American South, which impacts these characterizations. These two tales share many other points of reference in common. For instance, Mrs. Mallard in "The Story of an Hour" and Emily Grierson in "A Rose for Emily" die at the end of the story, and both deaths are in some way related to how the women felt about their male partners. In fact, in both cases, the women are deeply affected by the men in their lives: their personalities and lifestyles have been shaped and molded chiefly by men. However, Mrs. Mallard and Emily Grierson develop differently. Mallard is a relatively young woman, while Grierson When Brently Mallard is presumed dead, Mrs. Mallard and Grierson also exhibit different physical characteristics.
