Cayden's 'Empty': A Short Story
Her mother had told her a million times to stop for gas before heading to her friend’s house. Cayden, being strong-willed, did not listen. She had recently received her South Carolina driver’s license, and thought a quarter tank of gas would suffice to make it to her friend’s house. Cayden, however, did not take into account the construction detour that she and her brand new 1980 red convertible would need to take. That day is forever etched in her memory as a regret. Cayden was excited to see her friend. She loved the drive to Charleston, with the lush green trees and the warm scent in the air. All of a sudden,Cayden’s car shuddered, like one does when cold. Cayden thought this was odd, as her car was brand new. Her car shuddered again, as she passed the sign that said, “Gas Next 40 Miles.” Her eyes flashed to the screen in her car which read, “Empty.” She thought of her mother saying, “Don’t forget to stop for gas before your head out.” Cayden’s car came to a rolling stop. Cayden looked around and realized, she had no idea …show more content…
She approached the mansion with shoulders back. She was determined to not let herself back down because of an old man. She realized the soft, classical music was coming from somewhere behind the house. When she finally rounded the house, she heard soft sobs coming from the old cemetery. Inside the cemetery, was an old man. The old man with a hunched back and wrinkled face, turned his red eyes onto Cayden. Pruning shears in hand, he approached her. Cayden was shocked at first, at the sight of the old man in the cemetery. Eventually, the man asked Cayden if she needed help. She replied that she did, and that her car was just up the road. As the old man and Cayden were headed to the front of the house, she realized she had dropped her car keys in the cemetery. She returned quickly to pick them up, and heard soft sobs coming from the rear of the cemetery. No one was in that

While lying on the grass in the front yard, I imagined the exciting night ahead. Before long, Taylor and his girlfriend, Kara, arrived and picked me up. Almost immediately, I stood up and sauntered in my Duke sweatshirt and basketball shorts over to their car. I jumped into the backseat. Immediately, I was assaulted with the strong smell of perfume that had been sprayed inside the car because it belonged to Kara. Tonight instead of driving, she decided to let Taylor drive illegally without a license. As we drove off to Erik’s house, the rendezvous for tonight’s “Goatman” adventure, we saw a police officer had just pulled a car over. As we drove by, we breathe easier and relaxed because we didn’t see any more cops on the way.…

I saw the blur of black before I heard the screech of my tires on the scorching summer concrete. The crunching sound of metal on metal rang through my ears. I felt the frigid cold of my dairy treat hit my bare legs. My body jerked as the car swerved towards the highway. 1 hour earlier, 9:00 pm on a mundane Friday night, I was lounging around with my closest friend when an idea popped into my mind. “We should go get Dairy Queen!” I suggested to Gracie, my weary friend next to me. She gave me a cheshire smile and we were off. Little did we know, things were about to head downhill. Literally.…

My mother sat in the passenger seat scrutinizing the car continuously as the salesman sat back comfortably in the back-seat rattling of facts on the like a regular machine, trying to add more value with each sentence. I blocked them both out, in that moment there was only me and the car, it moved calmly out of the lot, no rattling sounds or an overabundance of engine clutter. There are many moments that are special in life, I’ve heard people talk about, their first kid, going to the prom and even getting married; this was my moment, when I was behind that wheel it was as if the whole world just faded away. I no longer paid attention to the verb back and forth between my mother and salesman, no all that mattered now was the ride. I was one with the car, every purr, every puff of the wind that flowed past its smooth exterior and it was in this moment that I knew I had found my first…

“I pulled up under a carport and I guess I forgot to put it in park. When I got out, I realized that the car was still moving and Holly and her friend were still inside, in the back seat. I jumped back in and tried to put my foot on the brake, but it must have been the accelerator because the car just kept going forward. It was so quick! I went over the little concrete block at the end of the parking space, right through a fence, across a small patio, through a sliding glass door and into a lady’s kitchen.” “Thank God, that lady and her son were out taking a…
