This song is about how the lead singer, Matt Shultz, dealt with the death of his last family member. He talks about how people usually grief and turn to drugs to help deal with someone’s loss. The line “I’ll keep my eyes fixed on the sun” shows how Matt is being optimistic and trying to make his life better from the death. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden’s brother Allie dies and Holden has a bold reaction to his death. “I was only thirteen, and they were going to have me psychoanalyzed and all, because I broke all the windows in the garage” (38-39). Although Holden has a completely different reaction to a family member’s death, this song relates to Holden because it shows the different ways that people deal with a person’s death.…

The best connection between the novel and the song, “Hate everyone” is pretty self-explanatory and the whole song represents Holden, pretty much. Holden was a bit of a juvenile. The chorus, which repeats throughout, portrays his thoughts throughout the whole book. The singer says that he hates everyone. Holden is always trying to find something bad in someone. The…

    - “I figured I’d probably see them again, but not for years” (225). At this point Holden decides that he will move away from all his friends. This is a big point in the story because after not deciding where to go or what to do with his life for 5 years, he finally knows. At first, he says he won’t really miss anyone except his sister, but then later on states that he will end up missing a lot of people, even the ones he didn’t expect to.…

“End of Innocence” by Don Henley depicts Holden’s biggest fear, entering the corrupt adult world. This song would match the scene where Holden’s “Little Shirley Beans” record for his kid sister, devastatingly shatters. It symbolizes the end of innocence for Holden and how no matter how hard you try, innocence is something that cannot be preserved. Despite him “[offering] up [his] best defense” by encasing it in a big envelope, it still “broke into about fifty pieces” (Salinger 154). Holden “damn near [sic] [cries], it made [him] feel so terrible, but all [he] did was… [take] the pieces… and put them in [his] coat pocket (Salinger 154). Holden cannot accept the fact that even his best efforts cannot preserve innocence. Similarly as the end of…

In chapter 3 Holden tells how he feels about the guest speaker, it reads, “He started telling us how he was never ashamed, when he was in some kind of trouble or something, to get right down on his knees and pray to God. He told us we should always pray to God - talk to Him and all - wherever we were. He told us we ought to think of Jesus as our buddy and all. He said he talked to Jesus all the time; Even when he was driving in his car. That killed me. I can just see the big phony bastard shifting into first gear and asking Jesus to send him a few more stiffs.” This symbolizes how people rub off on Holden. Holden tends to judge before he actually knows the full, in-depth description of the person. Rebellion for Holden is a way for him to conceal his true feelings. Holden is a teenager who hasn’t seemed to have found where he should be in life, and what his true purpose is. Holden also shows rebellion through all of the negative things he says. In chapter 12, he states, “People always clap for the wrong things.” Again, as you can see, nothing seems good…

I believe this song belongs on the soundtrack because it connects to the Catcher in the Rye's theme of loneliness and depression. Throughout the song, the singer expresses his feelings of how he used to listen to the radio to drown out all his negative thoughts, however since somebody stole his car radio, now he is forced to think and listen to all his negative thoughts. Some lyrics that really stood out to me were “I find over the course of of our human existence//One thing consists of consistence//and it's that we're all battling fear//Oh dear, I don't know if we know why we're here//Oh my, too deep//Please stop thinking//I liked it better when my car had sound”. This reflects in the book because as Holden leaves Pency and explores New…

In the song, Gary sings “all around me are familiar faces; worn out places, worn out faces.” This line can relate to Holden because Holden knew many people in his home town, New York, although he was not necessarily friends with them. For example, when Holden goes to Ernie’s bar he sees his brother’s friend (familiar face,) Lillian. Holden greets her kindly and speaks to her as if they’re friends but in reality he thinks she is a phony and states, “And I didn't like her much. Nobody did. You had to feel sort of sorry for her, in a way.” Mad World also relates to Holden because in the song, “And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad, the dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had.” Holden states numerous times throughout the novel that he feels ‘depressed and lousy’ ad he once said “depressed and all. I almost wished I was dead.”…

Throughout the whole book, Holden just wants to stay young and be a kid. He doesn't like the idea that everyone has to grow up and be an adult. He wants to save all kids from the terror of adulthood. In the song, stay young, We the Kings sing “ kick down the new year and future.” This basically means to get rid of the future completely and not grow up at all. By the end of the book, Holden realizes that being an adult isn't something he can prevent and he embraces it. He realizes that he is still going to have bad times, but also many good times as an adult and it's just the way life goes. One example where he shows that he is growing up is when he takes phoebe to the carousel and decides not to go on. He watches his younger sister enjoy it…

    Catcher in the Rye Song

After looking at quite a few songs and their lyrics, I found that the song “Yesterday” by the Beatles represented well a few of Holden’s situations on The Catcher in the Rye. The song expresses the emotions Holden feels for Jane. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden remembers the relationship he once had with Jane and how it was so simple, and how happiness came so easily when he was with her. Like on page 79 of the novel, Holden says, "You never even worried with Jane... All you knew was, you were happy” The lyrics in the song also say "Yesterday, love was such an easy game to play." It was so easy for Holden before, but now he struggles to enjoy relationships with girls and he misses the past when love was only about being happy. The thought of Jane dating someone else drives him crazy, so when he finds out that Stradlater was out with Jane, and that they were in Ed Bankey’s car together, he runs away from school alone. The line "Now I need a place to hide away" in the song represents that situation pretty well. After Holden realizes that all the happy times he had with Jane are in the past and always will be, he gets really sad and wants to hide from the world, and he hopes to hold on to his memory of "yesterday." I believe that the song "Yesterday" represents really well Holden's feelings for the past when Jane and him were together.…

In these chapters, we see the emotional state Holden is really in. In chapters 15 and 16, we see Holden making friends with Sally, and Holden becomes friends with the nuns. Holden talks about phonies and how the nuns have cheap suitcases, but they should deserve more because they are innocent of wrongdoings. However, in chapter 16 we see a side of Holden that we have never seen before the appreciate side because when he goes to church with his family he sees a little boy singing and finds the innocence and the purity. After this moment we start to see more uncontrollable stages of his emotions and his fragile state of mind seems to show more frequently. In chapter 17, Holden goes on his date with Sally. The date at first seems innocent as they…

When a child is singing Robert Burns' song, Holden, the main character in Salinger's novel, must have put himself into the image that the poem describes, a poor body, coming through the rye. He must think the poor body is tired, lonely, lost, and confused. It has been such a hardship for Holden. He was kicked out of three schools, runs away from school, has difficulties in school, cannot communication with anybody, and cannot relate to his peers. Nobody understands what he's trying to say. Adults won't listen to him. His father is going to kill him. The dishonest, unfair, ugly relationship that he see in people, elevator boy, tax driver and etc. disturb him, he is getting drunk at 16. He lies and is perpetually lonely throughout the entire novel. He even hired a prostitute whom he doesn't know and get beat up. He is as miserable as that poor body in the poem.…

The very first song, “Creep” by Radiohead was chosen by our group to start off the playlist because we thought this song could broadly show Holden Caulfield’s character. The most important part about this song is the lyrics. This song is about a person who doesn’t feel like he is very special, and that he does not fit in anywhere. “But I’m a creep. I’m a weirdo.” Although Holden never really talks about how he thinks of himself, he regards himself lowly when he talks about Phoebe or Allie. He respect them because they’re what he thinks are good kids. Because of past experiences, and Holden’s distant personality, people think he’s weird. Holden tries not to let that get to him, but deep down, he knows it too. He knows that he can be different from the others, and the way he think contrasts many of the same age. “What the hell am I doing here? I don’t belong here.” This part of the lyrics shows how Holden doesn’t feel like he fits in anywhere. He has been to more than five different schools—all where he couldn’t find a single place to fit in to. In his opinion, he isn’t accepted anywhere, but he doesn’t easily accept others, either. This is the reason for Holden’s loneliness, because he has changed his surroundings (his school) so many times, he’s always away from his family members, and he can’t open up to anyone. The soft sounds of the guitar show these little worries and insecurities hidden inside Holden’s mind. “Creep” is the first song chosen in our playlist as a way to show the internal emotions of Holden, and what the story is about: Holden trying to find a fitting place as he wanders New York, and the complicated thoughts of a teenager, not yet an adult, but not a child anymore.…
