Blueprint/Design of our catapult.

How a Catapult Works:
“Catapult physics is basically the use of stored energy to hurl a projectile the payload, without the use of an explosive.”1 The entire catapulting process depends on the storing of potential energy as tension of ropes or wooden arm or gravitational potential energy2
Catapult" is the name given to a variety of related siege weapons used to hurl projectiles. Crucial during Medieval times and even earlier, these simple machines make use of stored energy. This process can be described in the language of everyday physics, chiefly in terms of tension, torsion and gravity.”
Gravity is the second force which directs the object toward target while falling based on force one and angle of throw in its falling parabolic curve route.” 3”4

Different Types of Catapults:
Catapults have been used for hundreds of years. They're used today for fun, but they used to be the deadliest war machines on the face of the earth. There are three different types of catapults today and they all work very different.

The first type of catapult is called a Ballista. The way it works is that two wooden bows are attached a rope, then the rope is attached to a winch then pulled back, bending the arms.
When released, the ballista has a very deadly accuracy.
The second type of catapult is probably the most common catapult is called a Mangonel.
It has a long arm with a shovel/spoon type end on it. Then it has a rope connected to a winch that pulls the arm back to 90 degrees. then, you put the projectile in the shovel, and cut/release the rope then the projectile flies.
The third catapult is called the Trebuchet. It was designed for pure maximum force.

    One of the many siege weapons used during the crusades was the Trebuchet. It was extremely important to sieges and resembles the catapult, however the trebuchet was more complicated, intercut and damaging than its close relative. The trebuchet used a sling attached on one end to a wooden beam with a heavy weight at the other end of the beam. The beam was fixed at the top of two vertical supported arms to balance the horizontal, elevated beam. The trebuchet was loaded using a crank and pulley system to lower the sling side of the beam and raise the heavy weight side. Then the rope holding down the sling side was loosed which, in turn, would drop the weight causing the sling attached to the arm to quickly raise up releasing the projectile. The trebuchet had a very versatile arsenal, it was capable of firing boulders, sharp wooden poles and darts, fire, burning tar, burning sand, dung, dead and sometimes mutilated bodies or even disease ridden bodies, body parts, and dead animals, all of which caused utter chaos inside the castle walls. The force of the Trebuchet was capable of reducing castles, fortresses and cities to rubble with its immense firing power and its ability to launch up to 2000 missiles a day.     The counterweight trebuchet was extremely effective however it was subject to a great deal of stress during operation leading to a shortened life cycle. In order to resolve this problem, the counterweight was placed upon a hinge.     The best way to start an experiment is to ask a question. Our question is, “What is a trebuchet?” In answering this question, we will investigate nearly every aspect of a trebuchet, including but not limited to history, design, build, and theory. Our experiment was started with the help of a packet which contained much of this information, therefore the only thing that needed to be completed was the design and build, and the work that follows-testing, demonstrating, and reporting. From experience, the best way to build a kit is simplicity. We did not spend a lot of time designing, but rather using past ideas to base our design on. Our reason for this is that there has been hundreds of years since the creation of the trebuchet, and since it has been optimized, why try to “fix what isn’t broke?” As you can see in fig. 1, our initial design was extremely basic. Our build consisted of assembly, using the supplied supplies, testing, tweaking, and retesting. The main objective is to achieve consistency. We used2 L brackets as the initial main uprights, and eventually added a long straight piece to each to increase pivot point height. We supported these uprights by using 2 short flat pieces connecting the base and uprights at a 45° angle. Our arm is the piece most of the work was focused on. We tried to maximize the weight on the weight side of the arm, while minimizing the weight on the basket side of the arm. This was done by adding multiple brackets and hardware on the weight side, and by using lightweight pieces on the basket side. The basket was used and tied into the end of the arm, and a metal rod is used to hold the loop of the basket to determine launch angle. The majority of our procedure was based on the effect of the trebuchet, and being able to correct any deficiencies.…

    Catapults have been used since Greek and Roman times. They were used as siege engines against castles and walled cities. The ammunition loaded into the catapults were meant to break the walls with stones, fire incendiary missiles over the walls, or used for biological warfare, such as launching dead animals over the wall to spread disease. The type of catapult we built is a mangonel catapult. We like to call it RZYAACN (our names combined and it sounds cool). The catapult works through torsion, which is the tension caused when an object is twisted in one direction while the other end is motionless or twisted in the opposite direction, with equal and opposite torques at each end. Now to the construction of the catapult, we first had to decide which type we would build. We decided on the mangonel catapult because of its seemingly simple design, need for not too much materials, and awesomeness. We then went to the store Home Depot to buy our supplies. At Home Depot, we bought two 2x4’s (inches) which were eight feet and 12 feet long, and we had a Home Depot employee cut up for us into smaller lengths. He cut the wood up into two pieces that were 36 inches long, one piece that was 30 inches long, four piece that were 15 inches long, and one piece that was 18 inches long. We also bought one piece of square plywood that was half an inch thick, and had it cut from its original 24 inches by 24 inches size to 15 inches by 18 inches. We bought a 36 inch cylindrical piece of wood, which we sawed at the store into two pieces, 15 inches long each. Lastly, we bought 21 feet of nylon rope at the store, which was cut by one of the employees. We then drove back to the house, where the real construction began. We set up the base of the catapult with the two 36 inch piece of wood and two of the 15 inch pieces, setting them up in a rectangle.     We figured that if we found materials that were stronger and better reinforced, then we would be able to fling the marshmallow effectively. We proceeded to construct a strong base, and a better “sling-shot” like device per-say. See sketch 1, page 4. It worked better than the first, but was still not as good as we hoped it would be. However, we did not fret for it was the final day of building and it was the best we could’ve hoped for.
