Background
As with many other manufactured items these days, the bulk of electronic products sold on the global market are made or assembled in China. Although this has made good business sense, the outsourcing of production to the developing world (and particularly to China) has resulted in criticism from civil society organizations about workplace standards. Since the early 1990s, a range of people (including labour rights activists, trade unionists, students, journalists, academics and other concerned citizens) have targeted companies in the apparel, sports shoe and toy industry over the low wages, long hours and poor workplace safety in the factories from which they source (but do not usually own). Among the most well known recipients of such criticism have been Gap, Nike and Mattel, all of whom – along with many others – have attempted to use their buying power in the supply chain to encourage factories to improve. Until the 2000s the anti-sweatshop movement – as it has been generally called – focused almost exclusively on the three sectors mentioned. Several large retailers such as Tesco and Wal-Mart have found themselves under fire over the same

Critics of Apple note, though, that half of the suppliers since 2007 have violated the suppliers’…

Recently, manufactures have been under attack for exploiting overseas workers for cheap labor. Companies like Apple and Victoria’s Secret are recent examples of companies that have been criticized for the companies labor activities. According to a story by the New York Times, “Employees work excessive overtime, in some cases seven days a week, and live in crowded dorms. Some say they stand so long that their legs swell until they can hardly walk (par. 8).” Many of the workers are children forced to work in these conditions. In the same article by the New York Times, a former Apple executive said: “most people would still be really disturbed if they saw where their iPhone comes from (par. 26).” As stories like these start to come to light, Costco could begin to face pushback from consumers of these products, many of which Costco sells. Costco can see this as an opportunity to push manufacturers to implement changes in the manufacturing process. Costco may also be threatened because, if manufacturers are forced to change the manufacturing process, it will result in higher prices and sales will plummet. Also consumers may choose not to purchase these products.…

    * Gap provides a recent example of bad publicity because of sweatshops. In late 2007, it was revealed that some of the company’s clothes were produced by young children in India. Though gap had policies and procedures to prevent the use of sweatshops and children in the production process, it was subcontractor that was operating the facility. The company responded to the bad publicity by announcing plans for “ sweatshop Free” labels for its clothing. They also pledged to increase its monitoring of subcon-tractors and overseas factories.…

Common sense seems to dictate that if a company supports sweatshops, the best way to go against them is to boycott their products or protest until they get their point(s) across. However, many Americans don't understand the delicate balance of foreign economies. According to an article posted in the New York Times titled China, the Sweatshop. The gross domestic product per person trebled over the last 10 years, to $7,200. Furthermore, the share of the population living on less than a dollar a day fell to 16 percent in 2005, from 36 percent in 1999. This shows that sweatshops are actually improving the overall economy of china and helping to lift the Chinese citizen out of poverty…

Articles exposing workplace conditions in Vietnam and the rest of Asia constantly trickle into the world’s press. America’s clothing manufacturers use the companies in Vietnam because of the lower cost and higher output. It can be safely assumed that if a company employs so many people yet has extremely low production costs to foreign manufacturers that labor is likely being forced or is at a minimum unethical.…

    Benefits Of Sweatshops

One quarter of the global economy is controlled by sweatshops (Kristof Wudunn 542). Well, that can’t be true! They call it the Sweatshop Belt: China, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia and Bangladesh to be more precise. What comes to mind when we say the word "sweatshop"? Sweatshops are known for their inability to provide a safe working environment, low pay rate and child labour. Because of all these negative connotations, sweatshops are continuously perceived in a negative way worldwide. Nike, Gap and H&M are brands that manufacture their products through sweatshops. As consumers, we choose to avoid purchasing their products with the goal of discouraging sweatshops. The truth is, that does not benefit those who work in the sweatshops. Sweatshops would have a positive reputation if society took on a different perspective, if they were aware of effective boycotting strategies, and if the economic and social benefits of sweatshops were understood.…
