Case Study: The 130th Street Bridge
Our group chose to research the 130th Street Bridge, built in 1949 and is located in Cook County, Illinois over the Calumet River. The 130th Street Bridge is a polygonal Warren through truss with connections. You can tell it is a Warren truss bridge because it has thick diagonal members and verticals and its form of triangular shapes. This bridge is unique because it is a movable bridge and it is one of the most historic bridges in Chicago, Illinois. It is the largest truss bridge ever to be moved into place after being built off site. This bridge has deck plate girders which make it easier to move and get loads across. The climate of Illinois is temperate which basically means Illinois has winter, spring, summer, and fall, all the 4 seasons. The bridge spreads 400 feet along the Torrence Avenue. The process of building the bridge costs $101 million, which seems like a lot for a bridge, but it is really not once you factor costs for all the materials. Knowing major components can play a key role when you are creating something like a truss bridge, when you are creating a truss bridge it usually consist of 7 different major components which are the Vertical (located a quarter through the middle of the bridge) the Hip vertical (located at the left and right end of the 130th bridge) the Top chord (known as the flat surface that is over the bridge and holds the vertical and hip vertical along with the support of the bottom the chord) the Deck (platform above the bottom chord it also what the cars will drive on) the Diagonal (diagonal lines that are connected to the verticals creating a triangle formation), the Bottom chord (it holds the deck and the top chords, and vertical long with the top chord) and the End post which are the post that go to an angle and connect the top and bottom chord.
