The Ashurnasirpal II’s palace, now called the Northwest palace, was built and finished in 879 BCE at Nimrud, located in today’s northern Iraq. It was dedicated to serve as the daily living place as well as the palace to meet with ministers for the king. Ashurnasirpal II chose Nimrud, the ancient Khahu, to be the capital and then built a series of fortified citadels around it.1 And it was on the citadel the Ashurnasirpal II built the magnificent Northwest Palace. The palace stood out not only for its stable periphery but also for its first use of the carved stone panels in gypsum, called orthostats, with which the builders lined the interior lower walls. Both reliefs, Ashurnasirpal II and a Winged Deity and Deity Performing Ritual Purification were from those slabs in the King’s living room of the great Northwest Palace.…

When I first arrived at the Weatherspoon Art Museum on UNCG’s campus, I was in awe of the beautifully complex works displayed within it. There was a plethora of paintings, drawings, and sculptures, which not only captivated but enticed me with their unique beauty and grace. This made it quite difficult to pick just one work of art. However, as I passed through each exhibit and entered into Weatherspoon’s outside sculpture garden, I noticed one bronze sculpture in particular which held my attention and left a significant impression on me. This sculpture was Lunalilo by Deborah Butterfield.…

The Navajo tribe is the descendant tribe of the Anasazi, an Indian tribe. The Navajos have many traditions, some copied from the Hopi tribe and some made by their ancient belief.. One of the traditions of the Navajo is the sand paintings. The Navajo believed that if they put the sick person in the middle of the painting, and perform a special dance, the sick person would feel healing powers, and eventually be cured. There are many ways of making sand paintings, some even made without using sand. One way I made my sand painting was out of marker, beads, poster paper, and a ruler. The goal of my sand painting was to describe the sun god. First, I sketched the sun god with a pencil. I then colored the sun god yellow,…

Destruction all around you, clothing strewn about here and there, broken furniture litters the cold empty street. This is a ballad describing the effects of war on any town; it is timeless in that it could be occurring anyplace and at any time. The author uses a lot of visual imagery to give us a picture of what it is he is viewing. Author Billy Collins uses non-violent terms to describe the effects of the violent scenes he is portraying, example, the second story bedroom, “wearing only its striped pajamas” (Collins, 2005) and “a door dangling by a single hinge” (Collins, 2005) in each of these descriptions you can actually see what it is that the author is viewing, things that should be inside a home, and only viewed upon entry to the home, but with the added twist of destruction as they are observed from the street. This poem was easy to understand as the writing used everyday terms in describing the sights that were in the scenes. Mr. Collins paints a vivid portrait of this bombed out building and the scene outside on the street.…
