Simmons Case Study This paper looks at the Great Game of Life (GGOL) program and the overall impact it had on Simmons. The Great Game of Life (GGOL) was developed by the founder of Pecos River Learning Centers, change management expert, Larry Wilson. He believed that organizations “that nurtured their people, creating a context in which people can develop and grow, will, over time, enjoy the benefits of a committed workforce, a culture that foster excellence, and an organization that can change effectively to meet evolving demands of the marketplace.” (Casciaro, 2007) This belief was the groundwork for GGOL. Charlie Eitel, took over as CEO of Simmons in, January 2000. The Simmons plants were not functioning in a collaborative manner; it was more of a competition between each one. Communication and morale were low; this was especially true of the Charlotte, North Carolina plant. The problems originated with leadership, it was “very much motivation through intimidation, and was an awful environment.” (Casciaro, 2007) With the advice of a longtime employee, Eitel reorganized management and made several key changes. The effects at Simmons were telling “The manufacturing plants were more likely treat one another as competitors than collaborators. If one plant found a way to improve efficiency, for instance, that information was not shared.” (Casciaro, 2007) This shows that even leadership was being effected by the culture within the plants. The morale of the team members was low as “People tended to work hard only when the plant manager was watching.” (Casciaro, 2007) The team members within the plants were not receiving any type of motivation from leadership. Obolensky (2014) stated, “complex systems are highly adaptive to the environment within which they exist.” As we have seemed from the interviews, the four organizations have a high degree of awareness and are evolving towards a complex adaptive system (Obolensky, 2014). Additionally, three of the four companies point to communication as key piece or cornerstones to implementing their strategy. One company identified respect and teamwork as a part of their strategy. Teamwork is defined as being a cooperative or coordinated effort on the part of group of persons acting together as a team or in the interests of a common cause (Dictionary.com, 2016). It could be said that teamwork cannot exist without good communication. The will of the people is another core principle to getting chaos and complexity to work. People’s motivation was referenced by Global Aviation Maintenance and Global Aviation Technologies, Ohio National Financial Services, United States Army Special Operations Command and the United States Navy Recruiting Command (USNRC). On the other hand the United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) instills a strong since of enabling its personnel the freedom to act.     I interviewed Becky Hendrix, Executive Director for Professional Care Services. I recently had the honor of interviewing someone in our community who has had more than twenty years of leadership experience in our community. The interview ended up taking much longer than I expected because I was so influenced by what she had to say, I did not want to miss anything. Mrs. Becky Hendrix started her career as a CPA back in the 80 's for the World Color Press. Her leadership abilities were quickly realized, and she was promoted to head CPA.
