Forecasting Attendance at SWU Football Games
Southwestern University (SWU), a large state college in
Stephenville, Texas, 30 miles southwest of the Dallas/Fort
Worth metroplex, enrolls close to 20,000 students. In a typical town–gown relationship, the school is a dominant force in the small city, with more students during fall and spring than permanent residents. A longtime football powerhouse, SWU is a member of the
Big Eleven conference and is usually in the top 20 in college football rankings. To bolster its chances of reaching the elusive and long-desired number-one ranking, in 2005 SWU hired the legendary Bo Pitterno as its head coach. Although the numberone ranking remained out of reach, attendance at the five Saturday home games each year increased. Prior to Pitterno’s arrival, attendance generally averaged 25,000 to 29,000 per game. Season ticket sales bumped up by 10,000 just with the announcement of the new coach’s arrival. Stephenville and SWU were ready to move to the big time!
The immediate issue facing SWU, however, was not
NCAA ranking. It was capacity. The existing SWU stadium, built in 1953, has seating for 54,000 fans. The following table indicates attendance at each game for the past six years.
One of Pitterno’s demands upon joining SWU had been a stadium expansion, or possibly even a new stadium. With attendance increasing, SWU administrators began to face the issue head-on. Pitterno had wanted dormitories solely for his athletes in the stadium as an additional feature of any expansion.
SWU’s president, Dr. Marty Starr, decided it was time for his vice president of development to forecast when the existing stadium would “max out.” He also sought a revenue projection, assuming an average ticket price of $20 in 2011 and a 5% increase each year in future prices.

From the opening kickoff Houston Football's offense was clicking. Greg Ward Jr returned from a high ankle sprain, and led the Houston Cougars to a 52-31 win over the Navy Midshipmen. However, if it weren't for an outstanding game by the defense led by Senior captain Elandon Roberts, Houston Football would not be playing for the American Athletic Conference Championship December 5th against Temple or USF in Houston.…

In the stadium, which originally seated 17,000 when the facility opened in March 1955, was reduced to 15,200 when Ted Owens coached here (1964 to 1983). Since 1993, the facility has held 16,300. Here fans fill red-and-blue bleachers from the floor to window-lined ceiling, creating an ambiance that is so retro-perfect it feels staged. The place couldn't look or feel much more like the set of a gladiator battle. After inventing the game, James Naismith launched the program at KU, coaching the Jayhawks from 1898 to 1907, and his name is on the floor. Wilt Chamberlain played two seasons for the Jayhawks, averaging 29.9 points and 18.3 rebounds. His name tops a banner recognizing All-Americans and his No. 13 hangs from the rafters. Another banner recognizes the school's academic All-Americans, including Bud Stallworth, Darnell Valentine and Jacque Vaughn. Folks here are proud of the fact that legendary coaches Adolph Rupp and Dean Smith are both KU alums and protégés of the building's namesake. Allen Fieldhouse defies logic. It holds almost twice as many fans as Cameron Indoor Stadium, yet somehow feels just as intimate. And its five championship banners are six fewer than hang in Pauley Pavilion, but it has at least as…

Since it seems like the universities and NCAA are unwilling to examine their case college athletes are taking matters into their own hands. At a Northwestern University, a Division I college in Chicago, these players became tired of not receiving any compensation aside from their scholarships and they made a decision that made the NCAA realize they were serious. They were aware that suing for compensation could be a losing battle they took the next step. What these players decided the best thing to do was unionize in a way similar to employees and demand the rights that they deserve. After their coach told them that they were unable to do this they took the issue to the National Labor Relations Board (NLBR) and what happened next was a giant…

The study of macroeconomics demonstrates how individuals purchase, sell, and use raw materials to drive the economy around the globe. A useful source of data could be attained from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) where a person could gather current or historic data. After the collection of the data a researcher could utilize the International Monetary Funds website to see a forecast of any certain country. On the IMF website there are several choices for data such as International Financial Statics, Principal Global Indicators, and World Economic Outlook Databases. The noise was deafening, the ground was trembling, the stadium was filled with 80,000 people, united for one reason. They were all waiting for Clemson to take the field. Daniel Rodriguez, a new wide receiver, had just joined the Clemson Football team. He was the smallest, yet oldest person on the team. At 24-years old, he was five-seven one-hundred and seventy five pounds. This was his dream. He ran down the hill, along with his team, into Death Valley as the Clemson was enjoying their first home game of the season. “This is no ordinary day, and I suppose I am no ordinary college football player.” Daniel said before he took the field that day. This is no ordinary day for Clemson as well, as it was Military Appreciation day. He was not an average…

As the day started with the sound of cars passing by with the engine roaring, I knew it was time to go. I awoke from a dream that a 17-year would have about sports, specifically a 17-year old with the championship game, that happened to be on that day as well. I had the utmost confidence that my teammates and I will be able to deliver something that couldn’t be done by the last “dream team.” Those players had the utmost belief in each other and seemed that they knew where each person would go. It seemed they had a psychological connection, which I presume came from the relationship they had off the court. I would see them roaming the hallways with a smile that would give anyone belief that they can achieve those miracles. As time passed they grew older, flew towards a new goal. One became an assistant coach at UC Berkeley, one is fighting to become one of the starters and prove his worth at Washington State, and others stayed at community College still hoping there dream of playing college basketball becomes a reality. Now, after those long practices where you had players saying…

Alcohol being sold at college events is one of the most talked about things in the recent decade. The main question is: Should alcohol be sold at college sporting events? Personally I do not think that alcohol should be sold at college sporting events. The main reasons why is because there is too much of a liability within the facility, underage drinking, and violent behavior. When all these reasons factor in, it really makes sense not to sell alcohol at a sporting event.…
