Long-term care facilities are a traditional approach to caring for the elderly or chronically ill members of society. These facilities are set up in a couple of different ways to provide specialized care depending on a person’s need. The first point of our discussion is assisted living facilities. These are apartment type communities that specialize in assisting seniors who may have a problem accomplishing there normal activities of daily living. The assisted living facilities provide a non-skilled staff to assist with these needs. The next type of long care facility is a skilled cared facility. These types of organizations are set up to provide long-term medical care to individuals who one cannot care for their own selves, and two require specialized medical care such as daily medicine administration or procedural care. Healthcare facilities such as these assist with, wound and dressing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, and diagnostic testing on regular basis to insure your loved ones safety and over all wellbeing. The book As We Are Now, written by May Sarton, targets those concerned with the care of elderly individuals in nursing homes. In the book, Sarton artistically highlights the plethora of ongoing issues social workers face in their work as they attempt to provide quality care to the elderly population. The book is written as the memoirs of a very thoughtful elderly woman, Caroline Spenser, as she spent part of her life in a nursing home; and brings to light the lack of quality of care that elderly individuals received when living in such a facility in the 1970’s.…

The Eden Alternative is a fascinating and relatively new philosophy that has had an enormous impact on nursing homes and long term care facilities across the country. Founded by Dr. William Thomas in 1991, the Eden Alternative has seen tremendous growth and expansion. Researching this topic I spent a lot of time on the Eden Alternative website reading about their philosophies, values, and principles. The Eden Alternative is a nonprofit organization that with the help of grants and donors has been able to expand domestically in the United States, and internationally. The vision of the Eden Alternative is to eliminate loneliness, helplessness, and boredom. Those three comprise what Dr. Thomas calls the ‘three plagues’ that affect elders in nursing home settings. The mission of the Eden Alternative is to improve the well-being of elders and their care partners by transforming the communities where they live and work. I found that the message of this program really resonated with me, and I was impacted so much that I am now looking into this philosophy even further as my grandparents continue to age.…

Gawande explains that many assisted living facilities will promise a better way. He asserts that as we age, we tend to “narrow in” and prefer to spend time with people we know and love rather than expanding our social networks. There are two reasons he provides as to why assisted living facilities typically cannot fulfil the desire for connection. Second, because the elderly usually make this decision because of their children’s insistence, the facilities cater more to the sense of protectiveness that children feel toward their parents. As one gerontologist mentioned to Dr. Gawande, “We want autonomy for ourselves and safety for those we…

Nursing homes, however, are designed for persons in need of 24-hour nursing care (Allen, 2011) Even though they provide almost the same residential components of other long-term care options, which includes housing, personal care, protection, supervision, and sometimes therapy, the availability of on-site medical staff is the edge they have over the others. Nursing homes have custodial care, which a person with Alzheimer’s disease will need. The custodial care which includes assistance with all of the activities of daily living like eating, dressing, bathing, walking and medication management. With the above explanation, Don will likely choose a nursing home for the care of his wife, Mary.…
