Assignment 2- Plastic Pollution

Case Analysis

Plastic pollution is the pollution caused by the disposal and accumulation of plastic material into the environment. Plastic is now the most common material that is a basic essential in our everyday life. They are all around us in the form of plastic bags, containers, credit/ debit cards, stationary, electronic items and many more. Plastic is a material made up of organic synthetic or semi-synthetic degradable matter. This matter can be broken down into small molecules but cannot be totally eliminated from the environment. There are various types of plastic produced such as natural, synthetic, crystalline, amorphous and biodegradable. Plastic pollution is mainly caused due to the human made synthetic plastic being used and disposed. it ranges from pollution caused by litter plastic on the land, water pollution to marine debris. Specifically, there are six main issues caused by plastic pollution. First is the impact on environment. The burning of plastic material releases dangerous and harmful gases such as Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Di Oxide and toxic gases which leads to global warming. Second is the impacts on oceans killing. The plastic waste that is disposed into the oceans is the most dangerous threat today for ocean animals. The waste released by industries manufacturing plastic material into the water resources nearby and into the oceans is very harmful. The marine life is to the utmost threat with such kind of chemical pollutants. As plastics are not totally degradable, the small particles are eaten by the water animals. This causes problem, reproductive issues and sometimes even death. Even birds mistake plastic bags or material on the sea surface as their prey and end up consuming them which can be very fatal to their health. Many fish, mammals and amphibians of the water even lose or hurt their limbs due to the entanglement caused by the fisher men’s nets, sacks and ropes. Sea turtles are the

Every year, more than 300 million tons of plastic is made, this poses as a threat when you take a look at how much of this plastic is only intended to be used once and thrown away. Throughout the entire planet, plastics are being used more often and are being thrown away rather than using the recycling bin. When you throw these plastics away, they are taken to a landfill which often times will bury the garbage underground; nevertheless, although you can no longer see the plastic waste, it is still taking a toll on our health. Burying these products creates issues with the ground water that we humans, as well as our pets and other animals, drink from. When the plastics are buried in landfills, they have the potential to leak harmful chemicals into the ground water. Not only do these plastics effect our ground water, but they often times will find their way to the ocean if the landfill is found near a beach. The trash that has found its way to an ocean can float for thousands of…

Unfortunately, plastic does not break down into organic substances, which means that instead of breaking down into natural components that will go back into the earth, plastic breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces of plastic until they become nurdles, which are small pellets of plastic. This opposes an issue because as plastic gets smaller, not only does it turn into a large pile of nurdles that can be ingested by seabirds and fish, it also releases the chemicals that are contained within it. According to The National Geographic, Bisphenol A, a major component in plastic, is one of the chemicals that gets released when it breaks down. Bisphenol A is a chemical that is harmful to marine animals in a number of ways. For example, algae gains it’s nutrients through absorption. Algae can absorb bisphenol A, which will affect the entire food web in the end. Small fish tend to eat algae and zooplankton, and when a fish consumes algae that has absorbed bisphenol A, the concentration of the chemical will increase for the fish through a process called bioaccumulation, which causes the chemical to build up in the body of the fish. Not only are these fish at risk of death by toxic chemicals, but when a larger fish eats the smaller fish, they are also consuming the bisphenol A, only an even larger concentration of the chemical. This will continue up the food chain, until the largest marine animals, for example, a dolphin, consumes a fish and gains a high enough concentration of bisphenol A to kill them (nationalgeographic.org). This process is called bioaccumulation, and it has a great impact on the health of marine…

Walking on any beach these days, you're sure to find at least some form of plastic on the shoreline. Granted, there's a lot of other stuff floating out in the sea, but unlike natural materials, plastic doesn't degrade normally. Plastic bottles, containers, foam pieces made from polyurethane, and fishing lines are showing up in whole or pieces, and are getting dissolved into the water, to be absorbed by plankton. So much plastic has taken over our oceans, in fact, that in the middle of the North Pacific Ocean, there is a gathering of plastic, debris and toxins twice the size of Texas (Casey, 2007) affectionately dubbed the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.…

Plastic is one of the resources that is polluting our environment. Some scientist believe that the more plastic added to the ocean the more harmful it is for the organism in the ocean. According to Tobias Kukulka, a physical oceanographer by University of Delaware stated in, Plastic below the Ocean Surface, "You have stuff that's potentially poisonous in the ocean and there is some indication that it's harmful to the environment, but scientists don't really understand the scope of this problem yet." Meaning that the more plastic put into the ocean it becomes more fragile it get and drift to the surface the birds, fish, or even other wildlife animals mistaken these plastic as food.…

As mentioned in the article, “plastic actually does decompose, releasing potentially toxic chemicals that can disrupt the functioning of hormones in animals and marine life” (CBCnews, 2009) .The released wastes are harming the marine system, and animals that are in this whole food chain. And human beings get no benefits from their harmful actions to the ocean. At the top of the food chain, humans are the ultimate consumers, which means that the health quality of the animals at the bottom of the food chain have an accumulating impacts on the food (animals) we are consuming. When the ocean is polluted with toxic plastics, the seafood we get from the ocean are also…

We have been in a battle with ocean pollution with plastics for decades. Our battle with this pollution has left many innocents in the line of fire. The United States alone throws away 35 billion plastic water bottles a year. 80 billion tons of ocean pollution is simply food containers and packaging. Due to our negligence of the ocean and our waste, the marine population has suffered. The plastic pollution in our oceans alone has impacted 267 marine species. The marine animals become entangled, suffocated, infected, and many other things by this pollution. Not only are animals that lay under the water affected, but also ones who are above. Sea birds have been greatly impacted by this pollution as well. Many ingest the plastic…

Over one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals suffer from plastic entanglement or ingestion (Nichol, 2012, Plastics, like Diamonds, are forever, para. 3). The University of Califronia- San Diego (2012) reported that fish in the North Pacific ingest 12,000 to 24,000 tons of plastic each year (para. 6). These plastics cause intestinal injury and death. Sea turtles ingest plastic and experience blockage in the gut, ulceration, internal perforation, and death. Loggerhead Sea Turtles have been found with soft plastic ropes. They also have deformed shells due to suffocation. Sea birds ingest plastic, which reduces the stomach volume and leads to starvation. When viewing dead Albatross chicks, 97.5% have plastic in their stomach ( (Fischetty, 2011 1). Mammals are also greatly affected. 400,000 fur seals die due to entanglement and a one of the most disturbing, a Gray Whale beached with over 20 plastic bags in its stomach (Todd David, 2011).…

Ever since plastic was first introduced almost a decade ago, we have seen an increased trend in pollution, especially in the ocean. You cannot hide or run away from plastic. Plastic is literally everywhere, from the clothes you’re wearing to even the IV bags used in hospitals. Do you see the toys your children are playing with? Yes, those are also made from plastic. Plastic has made itself into an everyday essential because it’s convenient and cost effective. Plastic isn’t the only thing that ends up in the ocean. According to the Rinkesh Kukreja, editor of Conserve Energy Future or CEF, other pollutants of the ocean are industrial waste, oil, and harm chemicals. With the current trend in pollution, marine life could easily cease to exist and certain marine organisms could end up becoming extinct. Barry Commoner, a biologist and Harvard graduate, once said “Environmental pollution is an…

There are many methods people can use to reduce plastic pollution. They can reduce, reuse, and recycle. This is the oldest method that is effective if done correctly. They can buy recyclable products with little or no packaging. Buying these products will reduce the use of plastic and will reduce recycling needs which will lead to a cleaner Earth. They can also use biodegradable plastics so we don’t have to worry so much about plastic pollution. Keeping storm drains clean and never littering will also help reduce the plastic that end up in the oceans. Everyone can join the banning of plastic bags which will reduce a significant amount of plastic pollution. Refusing to use disposables and choose to use reusable or Tupperware products. This can reduce plastic pollution because instead of just throwing the container away after using it, it can be washed and reused. People can also help to clean up your local beaches. This will help to reduce the amount of litter and plastic pollution that will eventually end up in the ocean. If one cannot help clean up the beaches, they can make donations to help the clean-up. There are a number of organizations people can donate to such as the Natural Resources Defense Council or NRDC. NRDC is one of the nation’s most effective action groups. They work to safeguard the earth — its people, its plants and animals, and the natural systems on which all life depends.…

Most plastic is produced from oil. The world is gradually running out of oil. Scientists are now developing plastics that are made from vegetable oil and other organic matter. This means that the plastic is more likely to be degradable, so it will be less of a problem in future.…

Recycling is processing used materials (waste) into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials, reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, reduce energyusage, reduce air pollution (from incineration) and water pollution from landfilling by reducing the need for "conventional" waste disposal, and lower greenhouse gas emissions as compared to virgin production. Recyclable materials include many kinds of glass, paper, metal, plastic, textiles, and others. Nowadays plastic is one of the most commonly used materials for recycling. There are around 10000 types of plastic that are used for manufacturing a whole lot of products, right from pet bottles, to kids’ toys and even clothes. This resulted in a substantial increase in plastic waste dumped all over the world. So plastic recycling was introduced. This is due to various reasons and the chief of them is the environmental pollution. Researches show that degradation of plastic takes around 100 to 1000 years and it is the concern of human for future. There are numerous advantages and disadvantage of recycling plastic that we want to talk about them here. At first we examine the advantage of plastic recycling.…

Also some of us might think that plastics are not a big threat because its recyclable, sorry to burst your bubble but not all the recycled plastics are actually recycled, in reality most of the plastic stuff we discard into our recycling bin often just eventually becomes pollution somewhere else. Tragically, a lot of it winds up in the ocean, where it is harmful to marine life or it breaks down into tiny particles that are ingested by fish, and then by us.…
