This case focuses on the rise of Arnold Schwarzenegger to the governor’s seat of California and integrates a variety of topics such as goal setting, leadership, power and influence, and personality. After presenting a brief background on Schwarzenegger, the case proceeds to describe the actions that Schwarzenegger took to become governor. The case offers students an opportunity to observe how setting difficult goals for oneself and being committed to those goals results in success and performance. A clear example of Schwarzenegger’s commitment to his goals can be found in the quote, “there is no one, and when I say no one, I mean no one, who will back me off my vision. I will go over burning coals for that.” Additionally, there are instances throughout the case where Schwarzenegger’s high self-efficacy is apparent. For example, Schwarzenegger states that “I know it from my bodybuilding – that I can see my goals very clearly…It takes the confidence to ignore critics and naysayers.”…

This version of the eBay case has been substantially revised and extensively updated from the version that appeared in the 14th edition. While some of the fundamental material remains the same, the case includes new data and strategic issues that eBay’s managers must address as the company moves beyond the traditional auction niche that it now dominates largely unchallenged and as the company drives to continue its phenomenal growth by expanding into international markets. In 2005 when people thought about online auctions the first name that popped into their heads was eBay. In fact, eBay was the largely unchallenged leader in the online auction industry. Benefiting from the network effect, eBay had created the world’s largest Web-based community of consumer-to-consumer auctions using an entertaining format that allowed people to buy and sell collectibles, automobiles, jewelry, high-end and premium art items, antiques, coins and stamps, dolls and figures, pottery and glass, sports memorabilia, toys, consumer electronics products, and a host of other practical and miscellaneous items. The company had also become a business-to-business and business-to-consumer clearinghouse for Fortune 500 companies and large governmental agencies seeking to liquidate inventories and/or other assets as eBay’s core buyers changed from collectors to bargain hunters. Ebay’s business model had further evolved to include more fixed price transactions with the increasing popularity of the buy-it-now option, the acquisition of Half.com and the promotion of eBay. Ebay’s product mix also broadened to include more bigticket auctions including automobile, real estate, and boat sales. In 2003, eBay engaged in forward vertical integration through the purchase of the online payment service PayPal. At year-end 2005, eBay held more than 4 million auctions per day and had over 168 million registered users. The…

    a) After reading this case yes I believe that Mr. Oiler’s employee rights were violated for a number of reasons. For starters the case did not provide any evidence that proved that his personal life behavior affected his performance at work. The case study did not mention anything about Mr. Olier cross-dressing at work or doing so while spending time with fellow employees. What Mr. Olier chose to do during his personal time did not affect his job in any way according to this study. In fact it was shown that he was a good employee with a great reputation and work ethic. On another note I also believe that Mr. Olier’s right to have a personal life was violated by his former employer. I say this because employees all over the world may engage in certain activities that may not be appropriate for the workplace, however they keep them very separate. In doing this is how we have a work-life balance, what happens in the office should remain professional and benefit the company. Just as what happens at home or after work hours etc. should remain personal. This remains true as long as employees aren’t representing the company by wearing a company uniform etc. personal time should be just that…personal time.…
