Case Scenario 3

Case Scenario 3-1: Obtaining an IP Address

Last month, a server was configured for DHCP and was functioning normally. Five days ago, a test server on the same network segment was promoted to be the first domain controller on the network. Today several users on the same subnet as the original DHCP server have complained that they are unable to obtain an IP address using DHCP. What is the most likely reason users are unable to obtain an IP address?

a. The users’ IP address leases have expired.

b. A DHCP relay agent is missing or incorrectly configured.

c. There are duplicate IP addresses on the network.

d. The DHCP server must be authorized and is not.
ANSWER
d. The new DC would require the DHCP server to be authorized. Since the test server had just been promoted, that authorization would not have taken place.
Case Scenario 3-2: Maximizing Lease Availability

You are configuring DHCP scope options for Contoso, Ltd. The company has a limited number of IP addresses available for clients, and it wants to configure DHCP to maximize IP address availability. Choose all of the following actions that will accomplish this objective:

a. Set long lease durations for IP addresses.

b. Set short lease durations for IP addresses.

c. Configure a DHCP option to automatically release an IP address when the computer shuts down.

d. Create DHCP reservations for all portable computers.
ANSWER
B & C B. Setting shorter lease times will ensure that more addresses will remain available. C. Requiring a machine/device to release a reserved IP will ensure that all possible addresses will be available for use.

So, to force all the PCs to grab new IP addresses, you need to go to each computer, open a DOS prompt, and do an "ipconfig /release" and an "ipconfig /renew". If this does not work, you need to check your scope configuration, and make sure the network/subnet mask match what is configured on the router that is connected to this a particular LAN. Also you might need to see whether your DHCP server is on the same LAN, or whether your organizational IT is doing DHCP relays, etc.…

Check the workstations using ipconfig /all and find out if the ip range is within the address range you assigned, if it is a different address then the workstation failed to contact the DHCP server and has gone into apipa mode. The Network Interface Card might be assigned an incorrect driver. Another possible cause of the problem is that the patch cable is not plugged into the Network Interface Card, or is not connected to a switch on the other end. However, it could be that the server has run out of IP addresses that it can assign to clients. You can easily tell if this is the problem by comparing the size of the DHCP address scope to the number of devices on your network that request IP addresses from the DHCP server. But since only some of the workstations have got addresses the problem might be the DHCP server. Start off by doing some ping tests to verify that the DHCP server is able to communicate across the network. If the DHCP server is able to communicate with other computers on the network, then I recommend verifying that the DHCP server has an IP address that is compatible with the scope that the server is configured to assign addresses from. The server itself has to be assigned a static address in the same subnet range, such as 192.168.0.199. If this still doesn’t solve the problem make sure that the DHCP server is still authorized by the Active Directory to lease IP addresses. You should also check to verify that the scope is active, and that the necessary services are running on the DHCP server.…

The DHCP server would have the responsibility of assigning IP addresses to the client computers and other devices that are enabled as DHCP clients. This will eliminate the need to manually assign IP addresses to all users and devices on the network. This main server will also serve as storage for Active Directory and user account management.…

Having only two computers set up statically on a network will not be very time consuming having to change the setup if something on the network is replaced. Assigning client addresses automatically is by far the easiest option of the two. When setting up a DHCP server and leaving room for growth on the subnet you use, can also save time when installing new computers on the network. It would save the time of manually having to configure any new computers. Not to mention it takes way less time configuring a DHCP server than it would to configure each computer statically. Obviously you would want to pre-allocate IP addresses for fixed hosts such as routers, servers or even printers. These you would set up on the DHCP server as reserved addresses and set them statically on the devices.…
