The JIT or Just in time inventory system is an inventory strategy in which the company brings in inventory just at the time that it is needed, not before or after the start of production. This will reduce the high inventory level but will require a strong supply chain. The idea behind JIT is to help company reduce inventory since it will reduce storage and staff. It also help reduce waste for materials that have expiration dates so there will be less products to throw away. Since large manufacturing companies work off a forecast of future sales it is necessary for them to have as close as an accurate forecast as possible since this will determine what products they will need to have and when. Not only will this method minimize excess inventory it also help manufacturing companies to adjust their manufacturing strategy accordingly to customers demand since the global market is always changing and people’s needs changes. Since the company can reduce cost in managing inventory they can use that resource to invest in other areas to improve business.…

Challenges that surface when implementing a JITD system include resistance from sales and marketing departments and on the part of the customer. Salesmen fear the harnessing of a JITD system would flatten their sales numbers if customers are no longer purchasing high volume of product. Many sales people’s compensation are tied to sales numbers, so it’s only natural that any system that would reduce manufacturing and inventory would negatively affect their ability to reach these sales numbers. This would result in lower compensation in their minds.…

The implementation of JIT can provide many advantages to a company. The usage of JIT techniques can improve a company's problem solving capabilities by exposing problems in the production process as they occur. JIT reduces lead times and increases equipment utilization because of smaller lot sizes and delivery order sizes. Product quality is increased because quality is centered on the individual workers, and the workers are considered part of the team. Input from workers is encouraged. Adoption of JIT usually reduces paper work, and requires only simple planning systems. A reduction in inventory is always achieved as the JIT philosophy aims to eliminate non-value-added time or wasted time. (p. 43)…
