1. Yes I agree with the statement. I think the majority of consumers only think about how the price of an item affects them personally. They do not think about how the price affects the company or how much of a profit the company will make. I know when I bought my car my only concern was how the price affected me and how I could negotiate a lower price. I never considered how much profit the company would make or how a lower price would affect the company.
I think people from some other cultures would respond differently. I think it would depend on the persons cultural and personal values. I think a person from a more community oriented culture would give more consideration to how the company is affected. A ready example would be the loyalty seen in small town America. Many consumers refuse to shop competitively in order to support their locally owned businesses.
2. I think it is a wise policy for the WTO to not become involved in punishing individual companies. The countries governments should be the ones to monitor the companies in their respective countries. It is the responsibility of the WTO to hold those sovereign countries responsible for any foul play on the part of those companies.
I think the WTO was not given authority to charge individual counties because the temptation to abuse such power in favor of one’s own country would be too great. It would be too easy for a corrupt government official to issue policies that favor there country at the expense of others.
