Along his rode of character development we see Rick is in position of two letters of transit. He reiterates his position of not wanting to stick his neck out for anyone. This also creates an interesting relationship with Captain Renault. He is clearly a very corrupt police officer who has a decent amount of power and sways with whoever is in command, in this case visiting Nazi soldiers. He, in affect makes a wager with Rick on the spot about him not helping Victor Lazlo out of Casablanca. This represents a conflict of interest for Renault's character and the beginning of how his character is viewed. Later on that evening Victor Lazlo and Ilsa show up at Rick's and the audience is treated to another side of Rick's character. He doesn't tip his hand when he actually sees her but the song, "When time goes by" draws him back to a simpler time when him and Ilsa were lovers in France. Later on that evening we see the emptiness of his life as he drinks, smokes and…

What one can say about Casablanca other than a wonderful classic film? An inspirational, great love story, which can appeal to both men and women, was directed by Michael Curtiz. It is a multi-genre film based on Murray Burnett and Joan Alison's unproduced play, "Everybody comes to Rick's". It is filmed in the French Colony in Casablanca, Morrocco during World War II. It is a story about a love triangle between two men and a beautiful woman. It is one of the classic films made in the history. Its contribution to the film world is abundant. "This theory (Auteur theory), or style of film making differs from Genre theory, and as a consequence, it is very rare for a classic film to be part of a genre” (Moore-Bridger Par. 4). Casablanca received what it truly deserved, Oscar awards for Best Screenplay, Best…

Casablanca was a romantic film produced in 1942. Internet Movie Database summarizes Casablanca as “Rick Blaine, who owns a night club in Casablanca, discovers his old flame Ilsa is in town with her husband, Victor Laszlo. Laszlo is a famed rebel, and with Germans on his tail, Ilsa knows Rick can help them get out of the country.” Rick Blaine is the main character and he is described as cynical and doesn’t have a care in the world. He doesn’t even care for his lover Yvonne. He definitely doesn’t care about World War II happening in his country. Ilsa is an important character as well and is obviously loves her husband. Yet, there is a bit of a love triangle among…

Rick, despite his feelings towards Ilsa, sends her on the plane. The reason for this is the fact that he has a high regard for Laszlo, and wants what is best for Ilsa. He thinks in a general viewpoint of how the whole thing will turn out in the future. He says, "If that plane leaves the ground and you're not with him, you'll regret it- maybe not today, and maybe not tomorrow, but soon, and for the rest of your life." By this, Rick simply proves a new perception. Ilsa needs to forget about him and look at how going with Victor Laszlo will be a better decision in the end. Renault, a Nazi captain, also makes a tough choice. Renault has to face various decisions, one being whether or not to arrest his friend for the shooting of Ugatti Strasser, being an acute offense. Throughout the storyline, he habitually refers to Rick as a "sentimentalist". For example, he says, "Well, Rick, you're not only a sentimentalist, but you've become a…

Casablanca’s characters are unique, memorable, and most of all relatable. The lead male, Rick Blaine, is played by Humphrey Bogart. Rick is a tough, cynical, ex-freedom fighter who owns a Saloon called Cafe Americain. In a chain of events he transforms to a sentimental gentleman who sacrifices his own happiness. Ilsa Laszlo, Rick’s former lover and female lead, is played by the young, beautiful, and talented Ingrid Bergman. Ilsa jilted Rick in the past but returned to haunt him with memories and her perpetual beauty. Throughout the film it seemed she never got over her love for him. The film Casablanca directed by Michael Curtiz and released in 1943—at the height of World War II—is set in December 1941 in Casablanca, French Morocco. It is a time of escalating power of the Nazi party, which attempted to gain control of most parts of the world starting with Europe and Northern Africa. As a result of the ascending power of the Nazis and anti-German sentiments, many Europeans were desperate to flee their homes. Because Casablanca was not yet taken over by the Germans due to its distance from Europe, it served as the holding place or middle ground for those trying to escape Europe, assuming they could get there. People would travel from Europe to Casablanca in hopes of receiving letters of transit or exit visas—the only official documents that permitted one to leave the country—in order to get to Lisbon, Portugal and then to the United States. Visitors and residence of Casablanca frequent Rick’s Café Americain, a place where they can drink, socialize, gamble, and enjoy music without the fear of German invasion. Rick and his café are symbolic of neutral territory, reminiscent of the United States at that time. Using World War II as its back drop, the film tells the story of an accidental love triangle which includes Rick Blaine, his lover Ilsa Lund, and her husband Victor Laszlo, a proud opposer of the Nazi regime. The film uses music, cinematography, and lighting to emphasize and dramatize the love, hate, and neutrality in the story.…

1942, the year of the creation of one of the most historical movies known to date. That movie, Casablanca, based on the play "Everybody Wants to go to Rick's", still captivates audiences around the world. The setting of the movie is Casablanca, Morocco during the second world war. Casablanca is the jump off point to get to Spain and then to America, but refugees must obtain a fairly costly exit Visa to get onto the plane. In the middle of all this is Rick's cafe. Rick's former love Ilsa comes to Casablanca on her way to America and discovers Rick to be a resident there. The love triangle between Ilsa, her husband Laszlo, and Rick keeps the viewer in suspense until the very last minutes of the movie. This movie contains all the factors that a make a movie a classic. It has great performances by a top cast, a flawless script story line and director, and superb production techniques. In addition, it blends a raging love story with tormenting schemes which makes it one of ! the best Hollywood movies of all time. Casablanca was never expected to be a large scale movie. The script was written on a day to day basis even till the last few moments of the movie but despite all that, it made it bigger than any other movie in it's time. The movie took place in 1942 and was based around world war II which in reality was taking place as they filmed. It was because of the war that Rick and Ilsa were separated, and this was an idea that was not so far fetched and something that the audience could identify with. This was important because it captivated the audience and drew them in to see if Rick and Ilsa's undying love would ever be reunited.…

The film Casablanca was released in 1942 in the setting of Casablanca, Morocco. Initially, I expected this film to be a typical romantic wartime drama involving a man and a woman torn apart by differing political views. I also expected a very simple love story involving one dimensional characters and somewhat superficial dialog. Lastly, like many of the older romantic films, I expected a happy ending with the two main characters living happily ever after. I can safely say that this was no typical love story, and that none of my initial expectations were correct.…
