1. THESIS OF YOUR “MINI” DIS-ILLUSIONING OF THIS FILM The classic and award winning movie “Casablanca” has become favorite move to many generations all around the world. And although it shows some great acting and wonderful directing viewers have to be aware of the obvious as well as hidden messages of this classis. The movie glorifies Myth # 3, suggesting that your true soul mate should know what you are thinking or feeling, without you having to tell. There are other different myths in this movie but this one in particular was obvious to me throughout. The film was very well made for its time and it became a classic, regarded by critics as one of the best movies of all times, but it is not perfect. Its underlying messages suggest that people fall in love without knowing too much about each other and without communicating properly. Hiding your thoughts seems somehow interesting and creates suspense. But that can work only on the screen; real life can get very complicated and messy if we follow the same rules.

2. “MINI” DIS-ILLUSIONING OF THIS FILM

STEP 3. DECONSTRUCTION The primary myth illustrated in “Casablanca” is Myth # 7 (Your true soul mate should know what you are thinking or feeling without you having to tell.) Other myths that you can find tin this movie are #5 (To attract and keep a man, a woman should look like a model or a centerfold.) and myth #6 (The man should not be shorter, weaker, younger, poorer, or less successful than the woman.) The entire portion of the movie with the flashback from Paris, where Rick and Ilsa fall in love is a proof for myth #7. The couple meets, falls in love, but they barely know each other. She never tells him anything about herself. What kind of a relationship are they building when she is not sharing any personal information? She does not give him any real explanation when she does not show up at the train station- just a letter, which does not really say the truth. What makes this portrayal of love different

    “Against Love”: immediately controversy is conveyed by the title of Laura Kipnis’ article on modern relationships. The reader is put on the defensive as Kipnis starts her argument with strong metaphors attacking one of the most basic human interactions that we see as natural and embrace without question. Namely, love, a word held in superposition between complex and simple. Kipnis argues it has been overrated and too much is sacrificed in the pursuit of making it last. Defining her own terms that apply to most relationships such as “advanced intimacy” and “mutuality” she provides a new perspective on old notions. Her tone throughout is consistently sarcastic but make no mistake, Kipnis is addressing a real issue on what we value as a society. Descriptive language is Kipnis’ fishing line that keeps you reading, often creating vivid and objectionable images that no one can avoid cringing at. Concepts surrounding love and the ideal couple change from age to age and from culture to culture but Kipnis doesn’t disregard this. She compares today’s norms to historical precedence as she identifies the shift from focusing on the convenience of financially organized marriages to the achievement of unending life-long love.     "The Grande Illusion", the 1938 French film by Jean Renoir, is a fine example of how war impacts individuals and changes their views during a major war, however outside the norms of battles and warfare. The title of the film can be read and deciphered in many ways. The "grand illusion" could be interpreted as one singular imposing "grand" perception during the Great War; and the word "grand" can also come to mean "all-inclusive" describing the war with a scope of many "sub-illusions."     In The Grand Illusion, we see the ultimate breakdown of diplomacy, a world war. The movie recounts the struggle of a particular group of people who had to go through those hardships. Locarno’s A Democratic Peace? deals with the problems faced in the late 1920s and early 30s in maintaining the peace that came following WW1.     Lazlo is a fugitive fighting against the Nazi regime. He acts as a sort of juxtaposition to Rick’s character, they are two sides of the same coin. They are generally good characters who tend to fight for a good cause. While Rick is seen as a cloak and dagger, not personally involved man, while Lazlo is the hero fighting against the villains head on. Rick respects Lazlo and his patriotism. Rick ends up lying to Lazlo about his affair with Ilsa. Not only can this be seen as a way to protect her, but to protect Lazlo himself as well.
