Carol Sigelman's Life-Span Human Development
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, “learning is the activity or process of gaining knowledge or skill by studying, practicing, being taught, or experiencing something.” Referring to the textbook, Life-Span Human Development, 7th edition, by Carol Sigelman, on page 244, “memory is our ability to store and later retrieve information about past events, develops and changes over the life span.” In this essay, I will be discussing how learning styles are implemented into our memory to help us later recognize information that we had processed through specific styles of learning. To start, I must be in a completely quiet place, by myself, with no distractions. Then, I will pull out my notes and start to read and analyze each set of information. While I am doing this, I will create flashcards and organize them into groups to better recognize the information. Once I am done with this, I will then review the flashcards and try to explain what each subject is. During this time, I will often use had gestures to help interpret what I am trying to describe. Usually after I have taken all of these steps, I will be prepared for the test and almost all of the information will be incorporated into my memory through the learning techniques that I possess. Based on the things that I do to prepare myself for an examination, I trust that these habits take advantage of both of the learning styles that I obtained from the two tests I had taken recently. The two results that I received were that I am a tactile and visual learner. Examples of how my study habits relate to tactile habits are that I create flashcards and organize them into groups, and that I use hand gestures to help interpret the meaning of the subject. An illustration of how my study habits relate to how I am a visual learner is that I must review the notes, charts, and pictures to help me completely perceive the information. Through different learning styles tests, one can figure out the best way for them to learn to help them be more knowledgeable. Once they are able to identify their specific style of learning, they can then transfer the information more easily that they learned into their memory. The way to do this is through their information processing system. This is described in the textbook, Life-Span Human Development, 7th edition, by Carol Sigelman, on page, 245. To start, one's memory will be logged using their sensory register. It is then moved to their short-term memory through their working memory. Once it is stored in their short-term memory, the information is then encoded, consolidated, and stored in their long-term memory. The final step is retrieved.
