    Five Business Disciplines

Accounting is one of the five business disciplines that we have talked about in business 101 and I think that is the major that I am going to pursue. “Accounting is the measurement, statement, or provision of assurance about financial information primarily used by lenders, managers, investors, tax authorities and other decision makers to make resource allocation decisions between and within companies, organizations, and public agencies” (Wikipedia). Accounting is a key business discipline underpinning decision making in all organizations from the largest business to the smallest charity. An understanding of the subject would be very useful to anyone contemplating a career in management as well as to those who intend to pursue a career in accounting. In college, students need to decide on a more specific field of accounting. An accountant has many choices as to what particular field of accounting to specialize in depending on the financial information they want to analyze and how it is done. Financial accountants, tax accountants and internal auditors are all accountants in general, but require different training and work methods. A financial accountant records economic data and periodically prepares reports that show profit and other financial information of a company using the generally accepted accounting principles. The need for financial accountants is to reduce agent problems by monitoring agents’ performance and reporting the results to interested users. Financial accountants are basically used to prepare accounting information for people outside the organization or they are not involved in the day to day running of the company. A tax accountant prepares yearly tax returns for individual clients. For businesses, the tax accountant must provide data for the company’s tax returns. In many places, accountants must abide by national tax laws and regulations, but no requirement is in the US. Auditors are sponsored by the Institute of Internal Auditors…

During my first year attending Richland College, I was not sure what I was going to major in. I understand that if I choose a major I did not like I will be stuck doing something I might regret for a long time. I know that I wanted to do something that I can help other people in need with, especially with monetary matters, so I explored my options by taking some general education courses. By the end of my first year I realized that I had a great interest in accounting so I decided to pursue this subject from that point onward. My long-term goal is to pursue a career as a CPA in a public accounting firm. For this reason, I am seeking a professional accounting program that will further my professional objectives and fulfill my educational requirements. There are currently two options I have, one, to continue attending Ivy Tech Community college for the next two years, and then transfer to IUPUI, or my other option is simply to just finish out my Criminal Justice degree at Ivy Tech. I have not decided exactly which I option I am going to choose, however, I am leaning towards the transfer to IUPUI. I want to have an excellent education when I start my career because I do not want to stop at the first job I receive. Coming out of high school, I had no unearthly idea what I wanted to do in my life. Finally, after the years flew by, and maybe it’s from watching too many TV Shows, it just kind of hit me that I wanted to have some type of law enforcement job. I love the hard work it takes, perks as a police officer, intelligence, the chance to be able to save lives, the work force you would be a part of, and much more. My goal is achieve multiple promotions at my career and be at the highest rank I can be. I always have in the back of my mind though, that I have started school at such a later age than I should’ve, that I should just go for two years, then graduate from Ivy Tech and try my luck in finding a job. Then, if I can’t find a job, or better yet, do find one and find out for some reason I would not be able to get a promotion for some reason, I could always go back at a later time to receive a higher degree. What I would want to get out of my degree is a wonderful career in law enforcement. If being a police officer is the best thing that I would be, I could accept that and be with happy. I would love to climb those ranks and maybe someday receive something higher than a police officer. Anything would do however, I will be working as hard as I can these next few years of my life to fulfill my goals. Not going to college right out of high school may just have been the…

To most people being an accountant means sitting in an office crunching numbers all day and having little to no people skills. This could not be further from the truth. I have only recently decided that I would like to pursue a career in accounting after spending two years as a pre-medical student and realizing that I no longer had the desire to spend another ten years in school and residency programs. Accounting grabbed my attention because it does deal with a lot of numbers and for some reason I like that. I have always been very good with numbers and much to my parents’ pleasure very good with money. I enjoy creating budgets and looking at the best uses for money. I also love how accounting tends to build on itself, but always come back to the same basic principles no matter what form of accounting you are using. Growing up and to this day I have always created a budget with my money (whether it be allowance, high school part-time jobs, or financial aid) and I am the person who will literally update it on a daily basis. I also like the idea that the in the accounting field the rules and regulations are ever changing which means a constant need to learn new things. Even though in most ways accounting is a continuation of a previous step, with important information changing constantly it provides the opportunity for career growth and an opportunity to continue learning even after my undergraduate or graduate school career is technically over.…

“Employment of accountants and auditors is expected to grow 16 percent from 2010 to 2020, about as fast as the average for all occupations. There has been an increased focus on accounting in response to corporate scandals and recent financial crises. Stricter laws and regulations, particularly in the financial sector, will likely increase the demand for accounting services as organizations seek to comply with new standards. Additionally, tighter lending standards are expected to increase the importance of audits, as this is a key way for organizations to demonstrate their creditworthiness.”(Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2012-13)…
