Career Or Calling Speech
Good afternoon Mdm Koh, Mr Mui, Mr Kong, teachers and fellow secondary three students. I am Nicole from class 3E1 and I am here to give you a speech on job, career or calling Today in the hall, I will like to start with one question, should work be a job, a career or a calling? Today, the three main points of my speech are how job should be considered as work as it is about the salary, how calling should be considered as work as it is about the passion for a job and lastly why is career not considered as work. Ten years later, all of you here will consider on a job to feed your own family. Ten years later, all of you will find your passion for a career you really want and ten years later, you will be in a position for finding your …show more content…
Therefore, a calling should be considered as work. We should always enjoy working for our career to do work with great performance . Working with great performance will have a better impression from your boss and therefore, getting a higher paid salary. Not only you can enjoy working with great interests, you get to learn more as when you are passionate for things you like to do and you will always do your best and ace in it. For example,an astronaut is suppose to research and find water on mars. Everytime he fails and he kept trying and not giving up because he loves his job and he is passionate for it. He will keep trying until he found the water on mars. Thus, It is important for work to be a calling as it is the passion we give for our …show more content…
Having a high position, it may give you higher satisfaction of yourself for being more superior than others but having a higher position is nothing but to just think highly and proud of yourself. Having a higher position, only makes you more proud and does not affect much on the salary even because the job is not done well. Even when having a higher position, people may still not be happy because it is not their passion for that career. For example, my aunt was the secretary of a law firm, she was given a high position in the career but she was not happy with what she is doing. Everyday she will pull a long face and complains about her job because of her mood, she did not do very well on what secretary should do and thus did not impress her boss. Thus, a career is not important and not considered because it is just about the position not the passion or thinking about the salary.

To sum up, a job is important because it talks about your future on feeding your family and giving you a social identity, a calling is about how having passion for the job gives a importance for a career and lastly, how a career is about only position and it is not important.
To end of, I would like to end of with a question, Have you considered your career? Thank you for you attentive time listening to my speech and I hope you will have a splendid day

In the discussion of A Life Beyond “Do What You Want”, one controversial issue has been, do we find a vocation that we love and are passionate about or do we settle for a vocation that we are good at and do it very well, but not love or even like? Dr. Gordon Marino, Philosopher at St. Olaf College in Minnesota, suggests that both are important, and it is the individual who must make that decision. Marino also challenges his students to think about what makes them happy. Marino further tries to equip his students with the knowledge to make an informed decision pertaining to the rest of their lives. However, on the one hand, a person must feel complete and do what he or she does well, but then again choosing a career and just doing it well isn’t always the answer. A person must feel fulfilled or the career and money does not matter. In conclusion, Marino recommends finding a passion, turn it into a career and work till it becomes doing something a person loves. However, on the other hand, Marino also states that doing good work to help the family or help others is selfless, yet very rewarding. In many cases, helping others is a fulfillment of its own and then it becomes a person’s passion.…

I agree with Dorothy Sayer’s in her idea that some individuals only choose certain occupations because of the income or the status that they could gain. With our every increasing money focused society, it is hard to not consider income as one of the qualities of choosing a career. Although, it is important to look beyond those two characteristics. There are many careers that are essentially a service to others. I can only hope that my accounting mindset will be just that: a service to others. If my abilities, desires, and opportunities all aligned my life as an accountant would be perfect. I would see my dreams of becoming a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) come true; however, the title CEO would mean more to me than just a status. It would boost my inner confidence and reassure me that I can achieve my dreams with hard work and dedication. I think everyone should consider their jobs like the warriors did when fighting for our…

Having a career that makes the most money should not be a primary objective when searching for a job. Working joylessly with the intent to gain wealth cannot be viewed as the ultimate goal of life. Some who would argue that acquiring money is key to a fulfilling life in modern society. There is also the assumption that money allows a person to explore different opportunities and experiences, thus living life to the fullest. Is sacrificing one’s personal happiness and stunting passion within the workplace for the sake of gaining a substantial pay increase worth the price of such self-centered emotions? With this question in mind, a person can see the benefits of achieving wealth at the expense of personal contentment; however, merely engaging in different activities does not necessarily mean that a person has truly lived life to the best of their ability. Furthermore, the more a person centralizes salary, “ the less they will focus on satisfying their intellectual curiosity, learning new skills, or having fun, and those are the very things that make people perform best”(Chamorro-Premuzic). The blame on how a person views fulfillment in contemporary society should not shift to the individual, but to the influences of modern society. Thoreau urged people to choose careers that they are personally enthusiastic about because an individual's values and emotions should contribute a large amount of bias towards choosing an occupation. Relating to Thoreau’s philosophies which regarded happiness, a man must not tolerate working in a place where he is anxious and uncomfortable because “the more emotionally stable, agreeable, extraverted, or conscientious people are, the more [he] tend to like their jobs(irrespective of their salaries)” (Chamorro-Premuzic). The pressure of climbing the social ladder to reach a ‘happy’ life while in competition with millions of others can emotionally trap…
