The New York State Police is spread out into 11 divisions of New York. Their main priorities are to prevent crime and enforce the law, to ensure highway safety, to render general assistance, to promote peace and order, and also to provide high quality support. The New York State police maintain safety on the highway to make sure nobody is speeding and to assist in accidents, they reduce the deaths, injuries and property damage caused by motor vehicle accidents through vehicle and traffic enforcement and education.
The New York State Police tests all applicants based on flexibility, dynamic strength, and cardiovascular endurance. This consists of applicants testing their sit ups, pushups, and also they must run 1.5 miles under a certain time. Applicants must meet the following qualifications to be considered. They must be at least 21 years old, must be a NYS resident and possess a NYS license, must pass the physical test, and must also must possess a Graduate certificate from senior high school, NYS High School Equivalency Diploma, Military GED Certificate, the applicant must also have completed 60 college credit hours at an accredited college or university at time of appointment.
The starting salary for a NYS trooper during academy training is $50,374, upon graduation from academy the salary raises to $66,905. After 5 years you can be making a little over $85,000. The benefits they receive are incredible as well. They receive 120 hours of vacation annually, up to a maximum of 224 hours, depending on length of service, 96 hours annually paid holiday time, 24 to 40 paid personal leave hours based on length of service, paid sick leave accumulating at the rate of 104 hours per year. To top all of that off they also have excellent health, dental, and optical insurance coverage. The NYS troopers work on a 12 hour tour typically starting at 7am and ending at 7pm and vice versa. They get a three day pass on alternating weekends and generally work a 60 hour work week.
